‘Drop in for Coffee’: working with parents in North Perth New Community Schools

In this article, Patricia Illsley and Morag Redford explore the role of one New Community School project in Scotland in its engagement with families and the wider community. They describe the use of a community learning and development approach to inter‐agency working, which has enabled parents to take an active role in the project. The authors consider the importance of initial contact, the informality of provision and the benefits for both parents and staff in working together to build an inclusive school community.

Literacy,self‐esteem and locus of control

In this article, Alison Galbraith and Joy Alexander use case studies of a group of primary school pupils to examine the efficacy of an integrated, eclectic approach to the teaching of literacy, including whether constructs such as self‐concept and self‐esteem have a bearing on academic achievement. Circle Time activities, interactive teaching methods and discussion based on the principles of Solution Focused Brief Therapy aim to improve self‐esteem and internalise locus of control in children. Significant improvements in the reading scores of the target children are concurrently achieved with improved self‐esteem and locus of control scores, suggesting the usefulness of the teacher acting simultaneously as instructor, scaffolder and iconoclast.     

Undergraduate students in part‐time employment in China

Advantages and disadvantages of undergraduates undertaking part‐time employment are indicated from the western literature, together with discussion of the nature, amount and effects of part‐time employment. A study is reported of a university in China, using a cross‐sectional survey which investigates the characteristics of undergraduates holding a part‐time job, the reasons for taking part‐time jobs, the positive and negative impacts of taking part‐time jobs, the balance between positive and negative impacts, and the characteristics of the employment that undergraduates undertake. Important differences are reported between findings of western studies and those of the university in China. Implications are drawn for further research and development.     

城市化进程中新居民婚恋观的心理引导

中国的城市化运动在未来几十年内将使数亿农民成为城镇社区的新居民,从农民到市民角色的转变需要一系列的引导。文章在实证调研的基础上,分析了在市民化心理引导下新居民婚恋观呈现出的明显变化,探讨了婚恋观变化的基础,以及进一步引导新居民提高婚姻质量的途径和方法。     

精密车削人工髋关节的研究

通过精化ＣＧ６１２５Ａ车床、合理选择刀具材料和切削液、采用正交试验法优化刀具几何角度和切削用量，对精密车削人工髋关节进行了研究。结果表明，可使人工髋关节球部的表面粗糙度低于０．０８０μｍ、圆度误差小于０．００４ｍｍ，达到了美国Ｈｏｗｅｄｉｃａ公司同类产品的先进水平。     

初识陕北民间剪纸艺术

我国的民间剪纸艺术在艺术领域中一直处于非主流的地位，但其在艺术的境界上有着很深的内涵，在表现语言上有着其它艺术门类所不及的特色。章通过对陕北剪纸艺术的研究与认识亦是对人类自身与大自然之间关系的更深层次的认识。
