Modeling Zero-Inflated and Overdispersed Count Data: An Empirical Study of School Suspensions

The purpose of this article is to develop a statistical model that best explains variability in the number of school days suspended. Number of school days suspended is a count variable that may be zero-inflated and overdispersed relative to a Poisson model. Four models were examined: Poisson, negative binomial, Poisson hurdle, and negative binomial hurdle. Additionally, the probability of a student being suspended for at least 1 day was modeled using a binomial logistic regression model. Of the count models considered, the negative binomial hurdle model had the best fit. Modeling the probability of a student being suspended for at least 1 day using a binomial logistic regression model with interactions fit both the training and test data and had adequate fit. Findings here suggest that both the negative binomial hurdle and the binomial logistic regression models should be considered when modeling school suspensions.     

PITFALLS AND PROMISES: THE USE OF SECONDARY DATA ANALYSIS IN EDUCATIONAL RESEARCH

ABSTRACT:  This paper considers the use of secondary data analysis in educational research. It addresses some of the promises and potential pitfalls that influence its use and explores a possible role for the secondary analysis of numeric data in the 'new' political arithmetic tradition of social research. Secondary data analysis is a relatively under-used technique in Education and in the social sciences more widely, and it is an approach that is not without its critics. Here we consider two main objections to the use of secondary data: that it is full of errors and that because of the socially constructed nature of social data, simply reducing it to a numeric form cannot fully encapsulate its complexity. However, secondary data also offers numerous methodological, theoretical and pedagogical benefits. Indeed by treating secondary data analysis with appropriate scepticism and respect for its limitations, by demanding that tacit assumptions about the unreliability of secondary data are applied equally to other research methods, and crucially by combining secondary data analysis with small-scale in-depth work, this paper argues for a return to prominence of secondary data analysis in its own right as well as becoming a central component of the new political arithmetic tradition of social research.     

再谈实验数据处理方法的合理选择

实验误差分析是实验教学中的一个重要内容,学生常因不能准确理解测量误差的相关概念和分析方法,而采用了错误的实验数据处理方法。针对这一问题,通过电子自旋共振实验的测量误差分析,简述了直接测量、间接测量及不确定度传递的应用;利用脉冲核磁共振实验的数据分析,说明了曲线拟合与拟合不确定度的使用适应性。两者的物理实验结果表明,实验数据处理不是简单的纯计算问题,而是必须遵从严格误差分析原理的技术方法。     

基于RS232-RS422/485通信接口的远程称重数据采集方法的研究

针对目前我国广泛用于工矿、交通运输等企业作为称重计量设备的电子汽车衡在数据处理等功能上的落后现状,对SCS系列全电子汽车衡显示仪表(XK3122豪华双显示称重仪)的数据通信接口进行测试和分析研究,提出一种基于微机RS232串行通信接口的称重数据采集方法,进一步结合RS422/RS485串行数据通信接口标准与特点实现了远程数据采集并在实际运用中得到验证,具有一定的推广价值.     

基于FlashRemoting技术的实验数据检测系统的开发与应用

Flash Remoting技术是目前市场上实现Flash与远程服务连接、交换数据较好的方式。本文以密立根油滴实验为例,介绍了Flash Remoting技术,以及在.NET架构上,利用Flash Remoting技术,进行实验数据检测系统的开发与应用。

在介绍顾桥顾北矿13-1煤首采面综合地表移动观测站设计的基础上,重点介绍采用GPS技术进行平面连接测量的基本作业流程,内容包括观测方案的设计、基线解算及外业观测质量的检核、GPS网空间平差及质量评价、GPS网平面坐标系统转换及转换后的质量评价等4个方面,对于高程连接测量的作业流程也进行了简略介绍。对于连接测量过程中涉及到的数据处理分析模型,以参考文献的方式给出。
