Rethinking our underlying assumptions about what we do and why we do it: academic development as a case

In this paper, academic developers from universities in three countries explore underlying assumptions about what we as developers do and why we do it in relation to evaluating development programs. Through addressing three questions, key ideas emerge that highlight what is often overlooked in day-to-day practice: the fact that academic development has a ‘signature pedagogy’ defined by the ‘learning paradigm’; the potential role of different stakeholders in setting criteria for evaluation; and the inclusion of non-traditional academic development literatures (e.g., adult education, educational change, organizational development) to avoid perpetuating established practices. Our intent is to intellectually challenge ourselves and others to move beyond sharing program and evaluation activities to explore ideas and literature not often considered in our day-to-day work. While the context is academic development, we believe the questions and the answers that emerged are of value to all involved in staff and professional development.

Peer-supported collaborative inquiry in teacher education: exploring the influence of peer discussions on pre-service teachers’ levels of critical reflection

Scaffolding pre-service teachers to critically reflect on their practice remains a challenging goal. Exploring the extent to which peer discussion facilitates this critical reflection is the focus of this paper. Using a series of three linked tasks, pre-service teachers 1) reflected on a classroom incident from a vignette of practice, 2) shared and discussed their initial reflections with peers and 3) revisited their initial reflection in an attempt to unearth any assumptions they may have had. The study found that peer discussion broadened pre-service teachers’ perspectives beyond the initial ego-centric reflections, which were dominated by issues of pupil management, control and discipline. The peer discussion process supported pre-service teachers in identifying and questioning some of their preconceived assumptions. However, findings indicate that the process supported pre-service teachers in acquiring greater breadth rather than greater depth in reflective thinking. We would argue that rather than seeing peer engagement opportunities as a panacea, it should be viewed as a valuable scoping exercise to unearth alternative perspectives and to begin the process of ‘hunting assumptions’.     

Teaching lessons in exclusion: researchers’ assumptions and the ideology of normality

Filling in a research questionnaire means coming into contact with the researchers’ assumptions. In this sense filling in a questionnaire may be described as a learning situation. In this paper I carry out discourse analysis of selected questionnaire items from a number of studies, in order to highlight underlying values and assumptions, and their ideological import. These studies all attempted to investigate attitudes that Greek pupils show towards fellow-pupils defined as ‘different’. The survey questions are organized in terms of types of diversity, and the data is interpreted through the concept of exclusion and the ideology of normality. I argue that a number of items in the questionnaires embody assumptions likely to encourage attitudes and practices potentially leading to the marginalization of children defined as ‘different’. Finally I suggest alternative approaches to researching pupils’ attitudes and point out implications for research training.

认为情报分析人员思维误区导致情报分析失误,克服思维局限是改善情报分析效果的重要手段。将肯定假设的特征及其弊端与质疑假设的特点及其在情报分析中的作用进行对比,设计思维转换的流程,并提出训练情报分析人员形成质疑假设思维习惯的方法。

我国公共体育资源配置水平差异与空间演进特征分析

基于我国31个省市自治区2008-2016年公共体育资源数据，采用Degum基尼系数与马尔科夫链估计等方法，对我国公共体育资源均衡配置水平地区差距及空间演进特征进行实证分析，为完善新时期我国公共体育服务体系提供参考。研究表明：（1）我国公共体育资源均衡配置水平差距，呈现明显的逐年递减态势发展，但总体差距依然明显。区域间存量及增量速度差距是导致公共体育资源非均衡发展的主要成因。（2）资源整体增长趋势明显，且状态流动性较高，但资源配置水平较低省份依然占比较大，整体向中低水平发展。针对我国公共体育资源配置水平具体差异与演进特征，提出建议：（1）增强政府宏观调控，激活资源供给活力，促进资源均衡配置；（2）调动多元利益主体，规范体育市场运作，提升资源有效供给；（3）加快资源跨域流动，优化资源配置结构，实现区域协调发展。
