Questioning Race: Ancestry DNA and Dialog on Race

Human genetics and racial identity converge pointedly in the family narrative. Until recently, genetics, racial identity, and family narrative were all rather malleable concepts in the public arena. All were presented in anecdotal form for the most part, and were often based on certain social conventions. The interjection of popularly available ancestry DNA data adds an additional piece of information to the discussion of genetics, race, and narrative. Using the framework of both narrative theory and theory of social construction, this work uses quantitative and qualitative data to explore how individuals react to ancestry DNA findings and to consider if and how this information will change narratives, behaviors, and perspectives. We also explore whether one's racial identification makes a difference in initial accuracy and if there is a difference among racial groupings in terms of change in census identification based on knowledge of their DNA profile.

谭恩美的小说《喜福会》发表以来影响巨大，掀起了华裔美国文学的又一次高潮。在该小说中谭恩美以独特的笔调向读者展示了华裔美国女性母女两代人在男权社会、中关两种文化冲突、融合中对自己独特身份的认识，最终认识到东方／西方、自我／他者的二元对立是确立华裔女性移民自我身份的最大障碍，只有消解东西方二者之间的文化对立才能建构华裔女性的独特自我身份：将自我身份建构为联接东西方文化，不排斥任何一方，促进二者的融合。这对于移居美国的第一和第二代华裔女性来说具有普遍性意义。     

The relevance of identity style and professional identity to academic commitment and academic achievement in a higher education setting

Student retention remains an ongoing concern for higher education institutions worldwide. In the present study, we examine the predictive utility of identity styles, professional identity and academic commitment to academic achievement. We asked 120 second-year students in the profession of engineering in an augmented degree programme to complete the Identity Styles Inventory, the Engineering Identity Factors Inventory and the Academic Commitment Scale. We found that a normative identity style predicted professional engineering identity and meaningfulness, which predicted the participants’ investments in their studies. Additionally, a diffuse-avoidant identity style negatively predicted professional identity, meaningfulness and satisfaction, which provides empirical evidence of the contribution of identity to academic commitment. None of the variables we studied predicted academic achievement. Our findings are relevant, given current debates on access, equity and decolonisation in higher education, because it suggests that students’ sense of identity largely influences whether they feel a sense of belonging at university. Although identity styles and meaningfulness are not significant direct predictors of academic achievement, they probably do have an indirect effect on academic achievement through their direct influence on investment.

与国外相比较,我国大学校友会起步晚,高校对校友会还没有形成全面正确的认识,大多数高校也没有建立起完善的校友会管理机构,管理队伍薄弱,校友会工作流于形式,没有充分发挥校友会的功能和作用。高校应努力转变观念,正确认识校友会及其工作,完善校友会管理机构,充实管理力量,拓宽校友会工作对象和工作内容,培养在校生的校友意识,提高校友会工作实效。     

Reflections on the Field of Higher Education: time,space and sub‐fields

The objective of this study is to define the field of higher education and clarify its identity. It examines three analytical dimensions which, it proposes, shape the field: knowledge, approach and community. It argues that contextual knowledge around the issue of higher education has defined the field but has not determined techniques that are specific to it. The core elements of these three dimensions— contextual knowledge, the diversity in approaches and the multi‐disciplinary and loosely coupled community—suggest diversity in the field and in its identity rather than coherence and consolidation. The two dimensions of approach and community partially relate to the development of the field as a product of efforts to solve financial and management problems caused by the expansion of higher education after World War II in the US, and, in terms of experience, in Europe where expansion came much later, increasing public interest in higher education.

In this light,by exploring the coveted relationship between foreign language learners' own cultural and language identity, the paper aims to investigate the probabilities of optimizing L2 learners culminate in both cultural and social domains of life.     

场域性的“一家人”:民间体育参与中亲属结构的变化逻辑——W村打鼓活动的田野考察

以河南W村的打鼓活动为田野个案，调研发现，在民间体育参与过程中，村民交流虽然都会表达"我们是一家人"，但不同场域的亲属结构涵盖范围却存在差异：在仪式性场域下往往呈现出对异姓的隔离状态，而在日常生活场域下呈现出融合状态。研究认为，隔离源自于乡土社会信仰与禁忌规范、宗族秩序的强化，而融合则是因为乡土情义秩序的维持、村落关系共同体的重构。基于以上隔离与融合并存的现象进一步提出，民间体育为乡土社会从"差序格局"向"差序场"转型提供了"物理舞台"，并促成乡土社会形成"有机团结"的社会结构。
