On the mismatch between multicultural education and its subjects in the field

This article draws attention to the growing evidence of a mismatch between sociological categorization and actors' worlds of meaning as expressed in the classroom. The mismatch is especially blatant in cases where students from disadvantaged groups are introduced to what educators and theorists presume to be the liberating discourse of multicultural education. Nurtured by recent developments in the sociology of culture, the article sheds light on this phenomenon by delving into the logic of the actors' own worlds of meaning while making a concerted effort to avoid directing prepackaged allegations of ‘false consciousness‘ at informants. The article delves into the mismatch by reviewing multicultural education sites in two national contexts, the United States and Israel. Its findings from a unique high school in Jerusalem invite researchers to explore new avenues for understanding cultural encounters at school in view of the growing multicultural reality.

小议翻译的“忠实性”问题

在翻译活动中,“忠实”一直被认为是最基本的原则,是译者的基本责任。而实际上由于两种不同语言之间本身的差异、文化之间的差异、思维方式的不同、译者的主体性等原因,翻译是不可能做到绝对忠实的。分析了翻译不可能绝对忠实的原因,同时提出了两种避免“假忠实”的方法,帮助译者在翻译过程中在形式和内容上更接近原文。

语言之间存在不对应性是很自然的现象。翻译的目标不是字面上的对应。汉英互译过程中,真正需要转换的对象不是语言单位预先规定的意义,或曰孤立静止的词典释义,而是上下文语境中的变通意义。

Improving the Root Mean Square Error of Approximation for Nonnormal Conditions in Structural Equation Modeling

In this study, the authors investigated incorporating adjusted model fit information into the root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA) fit index. Through Monte Carlo simulation, the usefulness of this adjusted index was evaluated for assessing model adequacy in structural equation modeling when the multivariate normality assumption underlying maximum likelihood estimation is violated. Adjustment to the RMSEA was considered in 2 forms: a rescaling adjustment via the Satorra-Bentler rescaled goodness-of-fit statistic and a bootstrap adjustment via the Bollen and Stine adjusted model p value. Both properly specified and misspecifed models were examined. The adjusted RMSEA was evaluated in terms of the average index value across study conditions and with respect to model rejection rates under tests of exact fit, close fit, and not-close fit.

章首先对《光明之城》的真伪问题提出鉴别标准,认为在英译未能提供原件作科学鉴定的情况下,仅以书中有某些符合历史的事例证其“不是伪书”是不可靠的,只有通过反向求证,考察书中是有不符合史实的事例才是更有效的鉴别方法。章随后对书听若干问题逐一考证,认为它们在着明显的错误和偏差。把它看作“伪书”是比较慎重的。
