Gendered positionality among Irish male primary teachers: the staff room as a site of performative masculinity

The concept of masculinities has traditionally been defined in terms of crises associated with boys’ underachievement, the violence of homophobia, the under-representation of males in caring occupations, the rituals and discourses of laddism, and perceptions of disaffected and unrealised talent. Whereas the topic of masculinities has long been associated with warrants for distinctive and diverse male identities, it has a comparatively more recent history in the research on male Irish primary teachers as a particular social category. Two key findings are discussed in relation to performative masculinities – a form of strategic manoeuvring designed to exploit gender discourses, practices for control, power and privilege. First, the findings show the staffroom as a bellwether or highly developed locus for teacher socialisation through gendered discourses, events and actions. Second, the findings show nonsynchronous performative masculinities not only between male and female teachers but also with male colleagues. Therefore, it is argued that this frequently forgotten and neglected seam in the grand narrative of schools and schooling in Ireland needs to be more fully understood as a variable of quality, social justice and democratic practices across the full scope and sequence of the teacher continuum and as a prerequisite component in all teacher leadership programmes.     

Ella Evolving: Cinderella Stories and the Construction of Gender-Appropriate Behavior

This article considers the cultural messages embedded in the patriarchal canon of fairy tales and their implications for the construction of gender-appropriate behavior. The characteristics of feminist re-visions of fairy tales are discussed, and studies that explore the importance of access to alternative discourses in order for children to challenge dominant ideology are reviewed. Finally, four versions of Cinderella are analyzed, considering if and how they provide children with alternative positions to occupy.     

Claiming expertise from betwixt and between: Digital humanities librarians,emotional labor,and genre theory

ABSTRACT

Librarians' liminal (intermediate) position within academia situates us to make unique contributions to digital humanities (DH). In this article, we use genre theory, feminist theory, and theories of emotional labor to explore the importance of discourse mediation and affective labor to DH and the interplay between these areas and academic structural inequality. By claiming our expertise and making explicit work that is often not visible, we can advocate for new and varied roles for librarians in digital humanities. Our analysis is informed by both theory and practice, and it takes a dialogic approach that depends upon the interactions between the two.

女性观是对女性的认识和理解。本文站在女性主义立场,从曹禺早期创作社会现实环境、生活经历和感情体验、时代精神气候三方面入手,以《雷雨》《日出》《原野》《北京人》等为主要分析对象,对曹禺戏剧嵌性观的成因及特点进行了较为全面客观的剖析,试图对曹禺作品人物形象、故事主题等与其女性观之间的联系做些有益探索。     

数据报告:一种信息史学新实践

通信、大数据和物联网信息技术的高速发展对史学理论界提出了全新要求,在传统以人为中心的历史之外,以“物”为中心、以有关“物”的监测数据为材料的数据处理和报告编制过程也要求被纳入史学理论视野;现有的信息史学定义修正后方可回应这种要求。秉持信息史学的理论融合自觉、以跨学科的视野审视传统史学理论与数据处理领域的概念和理论,可以为两个领域带来具有启发意义的新观点。     

撒路斯提乌斯在罗马史学史上的地位——对《喀提林阴谋》、《朱古达战争》的分析

撒路斯提乌斯是罗马共和时期的政治家、史家。他的作品中只有《喀提林阴谋》、《朱古达战争》比较完整地保留下来。无论在选材上、写作上,撤路斯提乌斯都有自己的独到之处。他擅长以小见大,选择罗马共和时期的特定历史事件来揭示时代的特征。对这两部作品的分析一方面将会帮助我们了解当时罗马的社会状况,另一方面也可以更好地评价撒路斯提乌斯对后来罗马史家的影响以及他在罗马史学史上的地位。     

20世纪80年代以来中国女性文学批评回顾

20世纪80年代以来,有三个时期产生了相对集中的对女性文学批评进行的批评,即1986年、1989年前后和1995年至今。这些批评包括总体上对女性文学批评的评价、以批评主体为出发点的分析、对批评方法和理论的反思以及针对具体问题的探讨。尤其1995年以后,反思西方女性主义批评对国内女性文学批评负面影响的评论增多,某种程度上也反映出女性文学批评面临的困境。批评家们也在积极寻求问题的解决途径。但我们不可因此忽视国内女性文学批评在西方女性主义理论和实践影响下取得的成绩。     

第三届全国青年史学工作者学术会议综述

第三届全国青年史学工作者学术会议是世纪之交全国青年史学工作者的盛会。会上，代表们就20世纪中国史学回顾、21世纪中国史学走向、历史学的定位及功能等问题展开了热烈地讨论，精彩纷呈。与会学者在中国古代史、中国近现代史、世界史等领域的一些专门问题上也发表了饱含深邃智慧的见解。

撒路斯提乌斯是罗马共和时期的政治家、史家。他的作品无论在选材上、写作上都有自己的独到之处。他从当代政治、军事事件入手,以道德为评价准绳,尽量客观地描述了公元前2世纪至公元前后罗马社会的发展状况,他的写作特点和他的史学思想对后来罗马和西方史家有一定影响。     

女性主义批评视野下的《连环套》解读

张爱玲在《连环套》中借助霓喜的遭遇,呈现她对女性悲剧命运的理解:在男权社会中,女性缺乏必要的自我意识,对自身价值产生误解,甘愿沦为男性的附庸;男性掌控着话语权,使女性处于一种“失语”的状态;女性为了生存而走进无爱的婚姻,在灵与肉的冲突中,性格逐渐发生变异。张爱玲的苍凉叙事,传达出一位女作家对女性命运的隐忧。
