Teaching Them to Teach: Programmatic Evaluation of Graduate Assistants’ Teaching Performance

Academic libraries are one of the most important sources of “on the job” training for future library instructors. Librarians who supervise and assess these future library instructors (often in graduate assistant positions) often choose to provide observations and feedback each semester to these instructors in training. Scholarly literature, however, provides little information on whether this system helps graduate assistants to develop as teachers. The authors of this article assessed graduate assistants’ performance as teachers over three semesters using a system of observation and self-assessment. They analyzed both patterns and areas of growth and discuss the strengths and weaknesses of this system.

毕业综合实践教学中全程导入法的应用

针对以技术应用能力为主线的高职教学所存在的弊端，在毕业综合实践教学中采用全程导入法可以更好地实现高职以就业为导向的人才培养目标。具体实施步骤是：专业教师明确本专业具体岗位的应职应岗能力要求，对新生进行启蒙教育；学生选定毕业就业方向和相应的综合实践任务，进行综合训练。

研究生教育应当收取学费,学费定价与资助政策应建立在研究生教育是私人产品的基础上,学费是学校根据学生对研究生教育的需求以及劳动力市场需求所确定的市场化价格。研究生学费定价与资助政策应同时考虑以下因素:(1)基础研究是典型的纯公共产品,应用研究有更多的私人产品的属性。(2)研究生教育所颁授学位分为学术性与职业性学位两类。(3)不同的研究生教育方式具有不同的成本特点,教育过程可以明确划分为以课堂教学为主和以研究为主两个阶段。(4)国防研究生教育属于典型的纯公共产品,国防领域的研究与发展以及高级军事人才的培养属于纯公共产品范畴。(5)财政经费给予研究生资助的主要性质应当是研究生工作的工资。这一理论可称为多因素市场决定论。

How can only 18 black teachers working in Liverpool represent a diverse teaching workforce? A critical narrative

This paper follows on from the authors’ previous research into minimal Black teacher representation in Liverpool schools [Boyle, B., and M. Charles. 2010. “Tightening the Shackles: The Continued Invisibility of Liverpool's British African Caribbean Teachers.” Journal of Black Studies 42 (3): 427–435]. It is based on a re-examination of their findings of Liverpool's Black teachers’ historic institutionalised invisibility [Swann Report. 1985. Education for All. Report of the Committee of the Enquiry into the Education of Children from Ethnic Minority Groups. London: Her Majesty's Stationery Office.] and an interrogation of the situation as revealed by the 2015 data. The article uses as its evidence base, questionnaire responses and data from a sample of interviews with the current 18 Black teachers. Despite the voices of Black teachers being marginalised and even less likely to be heard, it is vital that the pedagogies of Black teachers contribute to a ‘dismantling of binaries and hierarchies that privilege Eurocentric paradigms of teaching’ [Escayg, K. 2010. “Diverse Classrooms, Diverse Teachers: Representing Cultural Diversity in the Teaching Profession and Implications for Pre-Service Admissions.” Canadian Journal for new Scholars in Education 3 (2): 1–8, 4].     

全光纤无源耦合器件制作过程中的实践创新能力培养

结合本科生毕业设计“全光纤光功率比耦合器件的制备”的实践过程,在理论上基于光波的耦合波方程,对熔融拉锥单模光纤耦合器的功率耦合比与拉伸长度、拉伸位置和损耗的关系进行数值模拟,使本科生在毕业设计的有限时间内掌握一种基本软件工具。通过设计过程中的实践活动,学生在指导教师的科研理念引导下,利用实验室现有的设备制作出2×2型、单窗口1×2型1550 nm和1310 nm宽带耦合器, 并完成了对制备出的光纤耦合器的光功率和光谱的检测。在实践教学过程中,突出体现了知识、能力、科研素质提高和创新能力的培养。通过无源耦合器件的制备,培养了学生的实践动手能力和科研思维能力, 为今后的学习或就业奠定了良好的基础。     

Starting and Sustaining an Undergraduate Research Program: The SURIEM Experience at Michigan State University

Abstract

Mentoring undergraduate students in research is both rewarding and challenging. In this paper we present how we established a summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program in the mathematical sciences at Michigan State University. A goal of our REU is to include students who are at an early stage of their study of mathematics. We share our experiences in recruiting students, designing research projects, and mentoring our participants. We discuss the challenges we faced and the solutions we found while working with a diverse group of undergraduate students from across the nation.
