The Developing Brain: A largely overlooked health endpoint in risk assessments for synthetic chemical substances

A large body of experimental animal research on the neurotoxic effects of certain environmental chemicals provides evidence of a cascade of neurobehavioural effects including learning deficits, hyperactivity, anxiety, depression, lack of motivation, increased aggressiveness, altered maternal care and bonding, and an over‐reaction to small stressors. For a number of years, scientific meetings and reports have recommended that assessing risk in chemical safety evaluations should include tests for developmental neurotoxicity (DNT) to uncover the potential of chemical substances to affect the developing brain. However, DNT testing has been required only in rare circumstances, and for some classes of neurotoxic pesticides. The role of developmental neurotoxicants as causative or contributory factors in children’s learning and behavioural disorders warrants more attention in both research and policy.

Reporting Monte Carlo Studies in Structural Equation Modeling

In structural equation modeling, Monte Carlo simulations have been used increasingly over the last two decades, as an inventory from the journal Structural Equation Modeling illustrates. Reaching out to a broad audience, this article provides guidelines for reporting Monte Carlo studies in that field. Having a proper written investment policy will aid in good governance and help the consortium properly manage its assets for the long term. A policy will define investment objectives, prohibited investments, a review process, a spending policy, and other needed details. A review of some special consortial needs provides insight into some of the unique challenges and opportunities faced by library consortia.     

A Glimpse and Analysis of Environmental Education Opportunities in American Higher Education

Abstract

As environmental educators continue to develop guidelines for curriculum, instruction, and professional development, it is important to consider the issue of transfer. This issue is particularly a concern in early childhood education, where the formation of environmental learning and attitudes is just beginning. The researcher attempted to determine how a variety of knowledges (declarative, procedural, and schematic) transferred when third-grade children were given problem situations. Data were analyzed using a multivariate analysis of covariance, and statistically significant results provide insight into further considerations for enhancing instruction in environmental education.     

Proposed Guidelines for Operating Counselor Education and Supervision Training Clinics

The purpose of this article is to justify and present a set of guidelines for the effective and ethical administration of counselor education and supervision training clinics. Responding directly to a call for creating guidelines, the authors address core issues surrounding their development. Benefits for clear and accessible guidelines and risks associated with their absence are covered. Drawing upon existing contributions from the field and related professions, guidelines are proposed along with a plan for their approval and implementation in counselor education training clinics.

The number of periodicals dealing with alcohol and drug abuse has increased markedly since the 1960's. The following trends regarding them are discernable: broadening of coverage to include all substance abuse; growing amount of international and interdisciplinary coverage; devoting more attention to all sides of drug problems; emerging self-help publications; emerging "underground" publications; growing interest in research in drug education; increasing government interest in drug problems; growing number of publications with multiple types of formats; expanding resaerch and treatment modalities; increasing number of review publications; increasing number of newstype publications. There is considerable overlap of coverage in the periodicals of the field, but each has unique features.
