The quest for fairness in language testing

The search for fairness in language testing is distinct from other areas of educational measurement as the object of measurement, that is, language, is part of the identity of the test takers. So, a host of issues enter the scene when one starts to reflect on how to assess people's language abilities. As the quest for fairness in language testing is still in its infancy, even the need for such a research has been controversial, with some (e.g., Davies, 2010) arguing that such research is entirely in vain. This paper will provide an overview of some of the issues involved. Special attention will be given to critical language testing (CLT) as it has had a large impact on language testing research. It will be argued that although CLT has been very effective in revealing the ideological and value implications of the constructs of focus in language testing, extremism in this direction is not justified.     

科技论文摘要英文译本的翻译简化之我见

语料库翻译学,即基于语料库的翻译研究,是以真实文本为主要研究对象进行的实证研究,也是一项描写性的翻译研究,主要关注翻译共性问题.该研究通过建立科技论文摘要的英语译文本与非译文本的小型单语可比语料库,使用语料库相关工具进行语内对比,来验证翻译共性的简化假说：关于翻译文本的词汇密度较低和平均句长较短的假说不成立;关于其词汇丰富度较小、高频词使用广泛和最常用词变化度小的假说被证实.

基于“输入和输出假说”的高职英语写作教学实证研究

从广州四所高职院校2012年6月份的大学英语四级考试中的作文成绩及对用人单位调查得知,大学生的英语写作能力还比较薄弱,有待于加强培养。从 Krashen 的“输入假说”和Swain等人的“输出假设”理论中得到启示,尝试运用基于“输入与输出平衡”的大学英语写作教学模式来提高大学生的写作能力,实证研究结果表明,这种教学模式能起到良好的教学效果。     

机械工程测试技术教学实验内容的探索

在教学实验中设计了基础性和综合性两种类型的实验内容,基础性实验侧重信号处理方法,综合性实验侧重对系统的理解和仪器的应用。通过选择当前较为新式的仪器并组织与工程应用相关的实验,帮助学生加强对该课程的认识、了解,同时提高学生的实践能力。

Combining IRT and SEM: A Hybrid Model for Fitting Responses and Response Certainties

This article proposes a model-based procedure, intended for personality measures, for exploiting the auxiliary information provided by the certainty with which individuals answer every item (response certainty). This information is used to (a) obtain more accurate estimates of individual trait levels, and (b) provide a more detailed assessment of the consistency with which the individual responds to the test. The basis model consists of 2 submodels: an item response theory submodel for the responses, and a linear-in-the-coefficients submodel that describes the response certainties. The latter is based on the distance-difficulty hypothesis, and is parameterized as a factor-analytic model. Procedures for (a) estimating the structural parameters, (b) assessing model–data fit, (c) estimating the individual parameters, and (d) assessing individual fit are discussed. The proposal was used in an empirical study. Model–data fit was acceptable and estimates were meaningful. Furthermore, the precision of the individual trait estimates and the assessment of the individual consistency improved noticeably.
