Crucial control measures to contain China's first Delta variant outbreak

The SARS-CoV-2 B.1.617.2 (Delta) variant flared up in late May in Guangzhou, China. Transmission characteristics of Delta variant were analysed for 153 confirmed cases and two complete transmission chains with seven generations were fully presented. A rapid transmission occurred in five generations within 10 days. The basic reproduction number (R₀) was 3.60 (95% confidence interval: 2.50–5.30). After redefining the concept of close contact, the proportion of confirmed cases discovered from close contacts increased from 43% to 100%. With the usage of a yellow health code, the potential exposed individuals were self-motivated to take a nucleic acid test and regained public access with a negative testing result. Facing the massive requirement of screening, novel facilities like makeshift inflatable laboratories were promptly set up as a vital supplement and 17 cases were found, with 1 pre-symptomatic. The dynamic adjustment of these three interventions resulted in the decline of Rt from 5.00 to 1.00 within 9 days. By breaking the transmission chain and eliminating the transmission source through extending the scope of the close-contact tracing, health-code usage and mass testing, the Guangzhou Delta epidemic was effectively contained.     

从义务教育地理课程标准看地理空间视角培养

地理空间视角是看待地理事物的独特角度,是运用空间的观点认识、观察世界的独特方法。文章以全日制义务教育地理课程标准(实验)为研究样本,从"位置与分布"、"联系与差异"、"过程与发展"三个维度分析和梳理了地理空间视角的培养内容及要求,并对课标的内容设置做出相关评价。     

甲型H1N1流感数学建模

研究甲型H1N1流感的传播规律,将人群分为易感人群、病毒潜伏人群、发病人群、退出者人群四类.分析了甲型H1N1流感在人群间的转化过程;注意到疫情主要受日接触率影响,不同的时段日接触率的影响因素不同,建立了在未预防控制阶段的自然传播和在预防控制阶段的非自然传播两个数学模型;最后给出了几点说明与思考.     

Linguistic intergroup bias tells ingroup/outgroup orientation of bicultural Asian Americans

Traditional studies of ethnic relations focus on racialization between Whites and Blacks, or ethnic stratification between Whites and people of color. This study aims at broadening conventional studies of interethnic relations to examine racial attitudes among people who have internalized more than one culture – i.e., the biculturals and multiculturals. Social psychological research suggests that bicultural individuals are capable of switching between two cultural meaning frames depending on contextual demands. Bicultural individuals vary in how well they integrate the two cultural identities internalized in them – i.e., their bicultural identity integration levels (BII levels). Their BII levels lead to either culturally congruent or culturally incongruent behaviors among bicultural individuals. The underlying assumption of linguistic intergroup bias indicates that people tend to describe more abstractly observed positive ingroup behaviors and negative outgroup behaviors and describe more concretely observed negative ingroup behaviors and positive outgroup behaviors. In this study, bicultural Asian American participants are hypothesized to use language of either higher or lower abstraction to describe actions of positive and negative valence performed by either ethnic Asians or European Americans depending on the cultural priming they received and their BII levels. The demonstrated pattern of ingroup enhancement and outgroup derogation of the bicultural participants point out the perceived ingroup/outgroup orientation of these biculturals towards their coethnics and people of the mainstream culture. Effects of the cultural priming and impact of BII levels are also discussed.     

“I Like English Better”: Latino Dual Language Students’ Investment in Spanish,English, and Bilingualism

This mixed-methodology study surveys 63 fifth graders in a one-way dual language school. Findings alarmingly indicate that although these students are native Spanish speakers in a school that delivers 50% of their instruction in Spanish, they prefer English both academically and socially. Subsequent interviews with 10 sample students of the larger study generate deeper understandings about how these students view their languages. If dual language programs are going to be maximally successful, then they must foster an environment that encourages students’ attitudes and investments toward both of their languages, taking particular care to protect and promote the minority language.

通过分析网络交往与一般交往的关系,阐述了网络交往最大的优势是使信息交流变得快速和便捷,更能体现人的社会交往的信息交流特征,同时分析了网络交往对促进大学生的全面发展的作用。     

Challenges and Possibilities of English: Speaking Back to the Centre

ABSTRACT

This article emerges out of my autobiography as an English language educator and the conversations that I had with three other English teachers in universities in Padang, Indonesia. These conversations formed the core of my doctoral thesis, in which I used Benedict Anderson and Edward Said to theorise our situation as English educators working in a postcolonial policy setting. Our conversations reflected our efforts to account for the tensions and contradictions that we have experienced (and continue to experience) in learning and teaching English in Indonesia. For all the differences between our pedagogies, our teaching practices highlight our efforts to subvert and turn our traditional classroom and monologues into a contact zone where our students willingly engage in dialogue with the text they read – constructing identities that are personally meaningful to them.
