Bridging mechanisms in multiethnic communities: Place-based communication,neighborhood belonging,and intergroup relations

Using communication infrastructure theory (CIT), this study examines how place-based communication, including neighborhood interpersonal discussion, geo-ethnic media, and local organizations, may have the potential to promote multiethnic intergroup relations through forging a sense of neighborhood belonging. Based on survey data consisting of 405 diverse community members, this study employs structural equation modeling to test the relationships among residents’ connection to place-based communication, their level of neighborhood belonging, out-group contact frequency, and perceived interaction quality across six interethnic dyads. Findings suggest that place-based communication does impact multiethnic intergroup interaction, but the direction and magnitude of such effects diverge along ethnic lines.     

Chinese university students’ mediated contact and global competence: Moderation of direct contact and mediation of intergroup anxiety

In recent years, popularity of social media and influx of international students have provided Chinese domestic students ample opportunities to contact with alien cultures both directly and indirectly. To understand impact of the new environment, the present study focused on Chinese domestic undergraduates and proposed a moderated mediation research model examining the relationships between mediated contact (through foreign TV series and movies) and the three dimensions of global competence (global attitudes, skills, and knowledge). We also explored mediation of intergroup anxiety and moderation of direct contact (with international students) underlying these relationships. Results from a multi-group structural equation modeling analysis revealed direct contact as a moderator, modifying the relationship between mediated contact and intergroup anxiety. Specifically, this negative relationship was significant at low, rather than at high levels of direct contact. Further, at low, rather than at high levels of direct contact, mediated contact had indirect relationships with all three dimensions of global competence via the mediator of intergroup anxiety.

“We must find a solution now”: The Ethiopian community-police relationships in Israel

Members of the Ethiopian community in Israel are over-represented in the police statistics, and their relations with the police are characterized by low levels of satisfaction. This phenomenological study aimed to explore the relationships between the Israeli-Ethiopian community and the police, through the eyes of young Ethiopian adults and police officers. The data was collected through in-depth interviews with 25 participants: 13 Ethiopian young adults and 12 police officers. The data analysis yielded five themes: personal experiences with Ethiopian community-police encounters, Ethiopian youngsters’ and police officers’ mutual perceptions, police discrimination of Ethiopian youth, Ethiopian community-police relations, and allocating responsibility for changing the situation. The findings are interpreted in terms of Social Identity Theory and Contact Hypothesis and illustrate how the interplay between conflicting groups’ identities and contact in a specific socio-political context shapes their members’ mutual perceptions and affects future encounters. Implications for promoting positive intergroup relations are discussed.

特质性心理因素对我国青年男子篮球运动员身体对抗能力的影响

通过专家问卷调查确定与我国男子篮球运动员身体对抗能力密切相关的14项特质性心理因素,并从中选择特质自信、意志品质、攻击性和情绪特征4项核心因素,对参加2007年全国青年男子篮球联赛,且成绩在前8名球队共106名运动员进行心理测量,将各项数据与运动员身体对抗能力进行相关与回归分析发现,意志品质和特质运动自信心可以预测我国青年男子篮球运动员的身体对抗能力,且意志品质较特质运动自信心的影响更为重要.
