Melancholic mothering: mothers,daughters and family violence

Through selected theories of melancholia, this paper seeks to shed some fresh interpretive light on the reproduction and disruption of gender, violence and family turmoil across generations of mothers and daughters. The originality of the paper lies in its exploratory deployment of theories of melancholia to consider issues of women, violence and generation. It addresses these matters through a discussion of the intergenerational emotional archives accumulated by two mother–daughter pairs in relation to their different experiences of sexual and other violence. It shares the mothers’ experiences of violence in their childhood and shows how these help to shape the ways in which they raise their daughters and address the troubles that their daughters experience. Different theories of melancholia assist us to explain the dissimilar emotional dynamics between these mother and daughter pairs. But equally their stories suggest the analytical potential of different theories of melancholia for understanding women’s and girls’ diverse responses to violence. Freud’s, Irigaray’s and Silverman’s constructions of melancholia, which are to some extent based on notions of emptiness, lack and insufficiency, are deployed alongside Eng and Kazanjian’s interpretation of a melancholic state of being which focuses on the creative potential of animating the remains of loss; an interpretation that invokes an agential relationship to the losses that violence provokes. The former help to explain what Eng and Kazanjian might see as the ‘hopeless politics’ associated with certain melancholic responses to violence and the latter help to explain what they might consider more ‘hopeful politics’ associated with responses that mobilise a more agential relationship to loss. Although not subscribing to such a stark binary interpretation, we nonetheless argue for an analysis that acknowledges the different ways that the remains of loss are animated. The paper arises from a wider cross‐generational study in Australia of the lives of educationally, economically and culturally marginalised young women and their mothers.

大学与政府间的中介性组织起源于西方,目前我国高等教育管理中引入的中介组织,无论是从观念还是从管理方式上来看,都是对西方大学制度的一种模仿和借鉴。通过对中西方大学与政府关系差异的视角比较,分析在我国现有制度环境下大学中介性组织有没有活动空间及其能否发挥应有的功效,并为构建适合我国国情的大学与政府间中介组织提出建议。     

社会中介组织还是专业服务组织?——中介组织概念名实辨

本文对我国改革开放以来公共事务和学术研究中频繁使用的“中介组织”概念名实不符问题提出了质疑并进行了论证。通过论述什么是与不是中介组织 ,作者指出 :目前流行之中介组织概念涵盖下的实体 ,如提供社会化服务的工程、技术、管理、财务、会计、律师、咨询公司及其行业协会应正名为专业服务组织和专业组织 ,并进而论述了正名的理由和原因。在此基础上 ,作者提请注意该类课题研究经费的合理配置 ,并指出 :至少 4个领域—工商管理、公共管理、工业经济学、专业社会学—中存在之相应概念、原理、理论、方法、技术可用来分析和解决诸如这些组织的运作、行业的规范、政府对它们的规制等问题 ,而那些应用理论解决实际问题或进而发展理论的研究才是真正的研究

信息不对称使得风险投资面临严重的代理问题，委托人需要通过对代理人进行适当的激励，以期通过承担风险约束代理人越轨活动的监督费用，来限制可能发生的利益偏差，恰当的制度安排能够降低代理成本和风险。在任何满足代理人参与约束及激励相容约束、委托人的预期效用最大化的激励机制契约中，代理人都必须承受部分风险。风险投资机制将监督、激励与风险分担有机地结合在一起，从而缓解风险投资中的代理问题。

随着我国教育决策民主化、科学化进程的加快,专家论证、社会参与、政府决策的机制正在日臻完善。作为社会参与重要形式之一的社会中介组织,在我国教育政策影响方面的作用不断得到重视。鉴于我国教育领域中介组织的发展相对而言还不成熟,从理论到实践都无多少经验可循,研究和分析国外教师教育领域中介组织影响政策的方式可以为我国这一领域的进展提供借鉴和参考。     

The Politics of Emotions in ELT: Structure of Feeling and Anxiety of Korean English Teachers

ABSTRACT

Using the notion of structure of feeling by Raymond Williams, this article seeks to illuminate an ideological understanding of Korean English teachers’ anxiety and deep sense of insecurity in English language teaching (ELT). Through a discussion of how their anxiety is grounded deeply within unequal social relations and how they reframe their anxiety through critical reflection on the cultural and ideological bias of their own anxiety, it points out the intricate relationship between ideology and emotion; teachers’ emotions are shaped by dominant ideologies that constitute the social structures constraining their position as teachers, while their engagement with those emotions also enables their self-transformation towards gaining confidence as teachers. The results of the study emphasise the tension between social structure and agency in teachers’ emotional experiences and discuss implications for teacher education and development.     

‘Finally studying for myself’ – examining student agency in summative and formative self-assessment models

Abstract

Promoting student agency has been seen as the primary function for new generation assessment environments. In this paper, we introduce two models of self-assessment as a way to foster students’ sense of agency. A socio-cultural framework was utilised to understand the interaction between student agency and self-assessment. Through a comparative design, we investigated whether formative self-assessment and summative self-assessment, based on self-grading, would offer students different affordances for agency. The results show that while both models offered affordances for agentic learning, future-driven agency was only presented by the students studying according to the summative model. Our results shed light on the interplay of student agency and self-assessment in higher education.
