The present work examines the role of source vs. content cues for the confirmation bias, in which recipients spend more time with content aligning with preexisting attitudes. In addition to testing how both source and content cues facilitate this biased pattern of selective exposure, the study measures subsequent attitude polarization. An experiment (N?=?120) presented messages with opposing political stances, associated with unbiased or slanted sources. Software tracked selective exposure in seconds, and attitudes were measured before, immediately after, and two days after message exposure. Further, information processing styles were assessed. The confirmation bias emerged regardless of source quality. Information processing styles moderated the confirmation bias as well as selective exposure to messages from unbiased vs. slanted sources. Selective exposure reinforced attitudes days later. 相似文献

College students with either high or low prior domain knowledge (PK) read a text chapter presented in short pages on a computer monitor. Half of the participants read with headings present and half with headings absent. The computer recorded time spent reading and rereading each short page. Learning was assessed through a structured recall task. In general, headings seem to improve recall of high importance information, and headings were more effective for high PK learners. Analysis of time data showed that participants with headings spent more time per word reading the pages with headings than participants that did not have headings. Prior knowledge had no effect on attention to either high importance information or important supporting detail. Low prior knowledge readers decreased the amount of time spent reading each word as they progressed through the passage and neither the presence nor absence of headings influenced this effect. 相似文献

This article examines effective communication in the midst of multi-varied cultures at Ibis West Africa adopting a qualitative approach of the constructivist’s paradigm. Misinterpretations, misperceptions and misunderstandings of both verbal and non-verbal cues as well as differences in creating common meaning of messages encoded and decoded and the mindlessness of the communication environment characterised the interactions between the expatriate workers and the local staff of Ibis West Africa. The article recommended that Ibis West Africa could focus more on intercultural relationship and capacity building among their multicultural staff to enhance effective communication in this multinational organisation. 相似文献

This experiment tested the effects of teacher immediacy, use of organizational lecture cues, and stuaent notetaking on students’ affective learning both immediately and one week after viewing an experimentally manipulated lecture. Results of the experiment suggested that teacher immediacy had the greatest effect on student affect and that this effect was stable over time. Additionally, an interaction was detected where students viewing the lectures with high immediacy but without organizational cues had sharper declines in affect than students viewing the high immediacy/with cues lectures. 相似文献
