To identify links among professional development, teacher knowledge, practice, and student achievement, researchers have called for study designs that allow causal inferences and that examine relationships among features of interventions and multiple outcomes. In a randomized experiment implemented in six states with over 270 elementary teachers and 7,000 students, this project compared three related but systematically varied teacher interventions—Teaching Cases, Looking at Student Work, and Metacognitive Analysis—along with no‐treatment controls. The three courses contained identical science content components, but differed in the ways they incorporated analysis of learner thinking and of teaching, making it possible to measure effects of these features on teacher and student outcomes. Interventions were delivered by staff developers trained to lead the teacher courses in their regions. Each course improved teachers' and students' scores on selected‐response science tests well beyond those of controls, and effects were maintained a year later. Student achievement also improved significantly for English language learners in both the study year and follow‐up, and treatment effects did not differ based on sex or race/ethnicity. However, only Teaching Cases and Looking at Student Work courses improved the accuracy and completeness of students' written justifications of test answers in the follow‐up, and only Teaching Cases had sustained effects on teachers' written justifications. Thus, the content component in common across the three courses had powerful effects on teachers' and students' ability to choose correct test answers, but their ability to explain why answers were correct only improved when the professional development incorporated analysis of student conceptual understandings and implications for instruction; metacognitive analysis of teachers' own learning did not improve student justifications either year. Findings suggest investing in professional development that integrates content learning with analysis of student learning and teaching rather than advanced content or teacher metacognition alone. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. When, in New Zealand, a new third-party government funding arrangement was introduced for sexual abuse counselling, counsellors experienced challenges to their work practice and professional autonomy. There are some parallels between this experience and the influence of Managed Care on counselling in the United States. This article interprets the ways in which the development of counselling in New Zealand, and the New Zealand Association of Counsellors (NZAC) interacted with the government agency, the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC). responsible for the funding. The resulting funding arrangements, while initially mutually beneficial to government and counsellors, are now being questioned by counsellors and the NZAC. Possible responses to this situation by New Zealand counsellors are explored and discussed in the context of wider international responses to third-party funding issues.  相似文献

通过对某高校191名非英语专业学生调查发现,大学英语学习者在使用英语进行交际时均有某种程度的焦虑感。学生的焦虑感与他们所感知的英语使用信心、英语学习动机和使用英语的愿望等因素呈负相关。这种焦虑感的产生主要是受学生英语水平和对所论及的话题熟悉程度限制等因素所致。在大学英语教学中应着力提高学生的英语水平,增强学生的学科知识,以降低他们在英语使用中的焦虑感。  相似文献

This review describes the state of existing knowledge with regard to dual language learners’ (DLLs) social–emotional development birth to age 5. The review focuses on several widely recognized dimensions of children's social–emotional development: self-regulation, social competence, social cognition, and problem behaviors. We begin by presenting a theoretical perspective that frames our understanding of the interplay between relational and contextual factors that contribute to the social–emotional well-being of DLLs. A targeted search of the literature identified 14 peer-reviewed studies published from 2000 to 2011 that examined social–emotional outcomes for young DLLs in family, school, and peer contexts. Results suggest that DLLs have at least equal (if not better) social–emotional outcomes compared to native English speakers. There is also some evidence that the use of the home language in early childhood classrooms can be a positive, moderating factor for DLLs’ social–emotional development. Contextual and individual characteristics are highly correlated with DLL status, making it difficult to develop clear conclusions about the unique influence of DLL status on social–emotional outcomes. We conclude by identifying avenues for future inquiry.  相似文献

通过研究发现,在商务电子邮件写作中,不同英语水平学习者在使用模糊限制语的频数上存在显著差异。究其原因主要是产出的模糊限制语呈现出过度使用的倾向,副词性模糊限制语缺乏多样性并倾向口语化,缺乏表达可能性的副词性模糊限制语。这些构成了学习者中介语中模糊限制语使用特征,对国内相关语言研究及其教学有一定参照和启示作用。  相似文献

将村干部的领导方式分为权威型、民主型、放任型三种类型,从经济绩效、政治绩效(分为民主管理绩效、公民参与绩效)、社会绩效、公共产品与服务供给绩效4个方面衡量村民自治绩效,根据对多个省份16个村庄的问卷调查,分析村干部领导方式对村民自治绩效的影响。分析表明,权威型领导方式与社会绩效以及公民参与绩效显著正相关,民主型领导方式与经济绩效、民主管理绩效、公民参与绩效、社会绩效、公共供给绩效显著正相关,而其他变量之间的关系不显著。因此,村干部民主型领导方式我国农村治理中具有普遍的适用性,权威型的领导方式也有一定的适应性,而放任型的领导方式是不适用的。村干部应灵活运用权威型与民主型领导方法,避免放任型领导风格和方式。  相似文献

This study examines the relationships among workload, news autonomy, burnout, job satisfaction, and turnover intention among Taiwanese reporters. Results of a survey of 1,099 reporters indicate that workload and news autonomy were significantly associated with burnout. In addition, burnout was found to be negatively related to job satisfaction, which in turn had a significant effect on turnover intention. The results not only highlight the important role of workload and news autonomy in predicting burnout, but also extend previous research on journalist burnout by showing that job satisfaction acts as a mediator in the relationship between burnout and turnover intention.  相似文献
