A Longitudinal Study of the Talent Search Program

This longitudinal study examined the impact of participation in the federally funded Talent Search program at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville. The Talent Search program provides career exploration and counseling services to low-income students with the potential to be first-generation college graduates. Postsecondary education enrollment rates of 758 Talent Search participants were compared with enrollment rates of a control group of 450 individuals who were eligible for Talent Search services but did not participate. Chi-square analysis revealed that Talent Search participants were significantly more likely to enroll in postsecondary education than were members of the control group (p < .001). These results have implications for career development services provided to low-income, potential first-generation college graduates.

随着思想观念和社会生活习惯的变革，我国特殊结构家庭数量正呈上升之势，给孩子的健康成长带来了不利的影响。为了贯彻“教育要让人民满意”的办学方针，针对当前特殊结构家庭对子女的负面影响、特殊结构家庭子女的明显特点作粗浅的分析，并就班主任的教育调适方法作初步的探讨，以期促进特殊结构家庭子女的健康成长。     

Parent Motivation Strategies and the Performance of Preschoolers in a Rural Philippine Municipality

Although under-investment in children is an identified problem in low-income developing countries (LDC) and the establishment and use of preschools has been advocated as a partial remedy, the readiness of children and parents for preschool in LDC has been little studied. This paper assesses motivational techniques that parents report using with preschool children in a rural Philippine municipality. The purposes of this study were to examine: (a) whether the motivation strategies used by parents are consistent with a “balanced, holistic approach” to child development and (b) whether the parents’ motivational strategies are associated with school performance. The study suggests some over-weighting by parents of academic achievement, but otherwise more appropriate child-oriented behaviors were observed than reported in some research. Motivation by parents also was associated with preschool performance.     

The Transition to Kindergarten

The transition to kindergarten is a significant event for young children and their families. The methods teacher use to orient children and families to formal schooling can have a long term effect on academic achievement. This study examined the transition activities of over 3000 kindergarten teachers that participated in the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study conducted by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). The results show that most schools do not provide a comprehensive transition plan that allows teachers and parents to exchange important information about child development and school expectations.

Lifelong learning,income inequality and social mobility in Singapore

Singapore has been assigned the role of a ‘model’ nation state primarily for two reasons: its rapid rate of economic growth and its outstanding performance on cross-national tests of educational achievement, such as PISA. This has resulted in advocates of reform citing it as illustrating ‘best practices’, especially in the field of education, and it has more generally been viewed as demonstrating the benefits of economic globalization. This paper analyses from a comparative perspective the more problematic and relatively unexplored third dimension of being a model ‘global’ nation, namely its impact on income inequality and the quality of citizens’ life. We focus on the role of the system of lifelong learning which was designed generally to upgrade the skills of the workforce and specifically to provide low-paid/skilled workers with opportunities to improve incomes and enhance their socio-economic mobility. We demonstrate that despite the remarkable economic growth at a national level and the significant expansion of lifelong learning provision, productivity rates have not improved, income inequality has increased, social mobility has declined and the ‘quality of life’ is, in comparative terms, poor.     

Schoolhouse in the Field: How Agrarian Cultural Values Shaped Texas Schools for Mexican Children, 1910-1930

This paper discusses the influence of agrarian cultural values on schools for children of Mexican heritage in Texas from 1910-1930. Both White landowners and Mexican laborers displayed values connected to the farming lifestyle in regards to children and education during this period. These shared agrarian values were bolstered by White racist behavior to keep education for Mexican children at a minimum. The weak educational system these values created has fostered continued low academic achievement for Mexican Americans during the past 80 years. Beliefs held by both Whites and Mexicans about children's work in the fields and the necessity of education are discussed. Other characteristics of both Whites and Mexicans in Texas are described. School facilities, teachers, curriculum, funding, compulsory attendance, and the typical attendance and achievement for children of Mexican heritage are explained. The challenge to the old system by Mexican Americans is also noted. The purpose of the rudimentary schools created in Texas and the implications for today concludes the discussion.
