Abstract

Rouché’s Theorem is a standard topic in undergraduate complex analysis. It is usually covered near the end of the course with applications relating to pure mathematics only (e.g., using it to produce an alternate proof of the Fundamental Theorem of Algebra). The winding number provides a geometric interpretation relating to the conclusion of Rouché’s Theorem, but most undergraduate texts give no geometric insights that lead to an understanding of why Rouché’s Theorem holds. In addition, most texts do not inform students that a stronger version of the theorem exists. In this paper we present a simplified proof of the stronger version, which is a suitable topic for students to pursue as a short project, and provide a geometric argument for the weaker version. Finally, as a project for advanced students, we unpack a standard application of this theorem as used in control systems: the Nyquist stability criterion.  相似文献

This paper reports on the efficacy of a professional development framework premised on four complex systems design principles: Feedback, Adaptation, Network Growth and Self-organization (FANS). The framework is applied to the design and delivery of the first 2 years of a 3-year study aimed at improving teacher and student understanding of computational modeling tools. We demonstrate that structuring a professional development program around the FANS framework facilitates the development of important strategies and processes for program organizers such as the identification of salient system variables, effectively distributing expertise, adaptation and improvement of professional development resources and activities and building technological, human and social capital. For participants, there is evidence to show that the FANS framework encourages: professional goal setting, engagement in a strong professional community and personal autonomy by enabling individualized purpose—all fundamental components in promoting self-organization. We discuss three meta-level themes that may account for the success of the FANS framework: structure versus agency, exploration versus exploitation and short-term versus long-term goals. Each illustrates the tension that exists between competing variables that need to be considered in order to work effectively in real world complex educational systems.  相似文献

This paper discusses how a group leader computer tutor may aid students in learning collaborative skills in a co-operative learning environment. However, students need to learn collaborative skills and practice using them. The group leader computer tutor discussed in this paper is designed on the principles of co-operative learning, intelligent tutoring systems and computer-supported collaborative work within an intelligent collaborative learning system (ICLS). The group leader aims to facilitate group work on the task level and to teach students how to use collaborative skills in the discussion level as students work on networked computers in the Jigsaw method of co-operative learning. The ICLS and its group leader were used by two classes at a liberal arts university. Qualitative research shows that the students' co-operative attitudes changed and academic achievement improved from pre- to post-treatment. Students, especially, used the communication skill of openness in comment type discussions. The students enjoyed working collaboratively through the ICLS and their teachers thought that the experience was valuable for them.  相似文献
