ABSTRACT

The article describes the activities of the newly established Working Group on Digital Projects, a sub-committee of the Bibliography and Documentation Committee of the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies.     

Bridging Generations

Abstract

Since 1994, undergraduate students at Rutgers University have had the opportunity to explore broad issues in the history of women's higher education by examining issues surrounding single-sex and coeducation at their own institution, with specific concentration on social issues and student culture. Four distinct seminars and projects, two of which incorporate oral history, and all four involving historical research in archival sources, have contributed to the historical literature and have added valuable documentation on the history of women at Rutgers University. This article presents an overview of these specific courses. It further provides an assessment from the particular perspective of a university archivist who attempts to document the history of the institution, promote the use of that documentary record by a diverse audience of users, including undergraduate students, and who has had the opportunity to teach two seminars on the history of women's higher education, using Rutgers as a case study. The courses to be discussed are: “Rutgers Women: A Living History” (1993-1995), a research seminar incorporating oral history of the first women students to enter the previously all-male Rutgers College in 1972; the Rutgers Oral History Archives of World War II (1994 to present), an ongoing project recording the memories of Rutgers men and women and their wartime experiences; the Douglass College Scholar's Program seminar on psychobiography (1998), a seminar which explored the life of Mary Clara Kangler, a 1938 graduate of the New Jersey College for Women whose tragic life ended in suicide; and the Douglass College Scholar's Program seminar on the history of the Douglass College and its role in the history of women's higher education in the United States (1999-2002), a research seminar based on archival research which explored the experiences of women and the controversial issues surrounding women's education at Rutgers.

This article discusses ongoing changes and future challenges in collecting multi-ethnic and multi-cultural archival materials, as viewed in the context of several collecting projects undertaken by the former Balch Institute for Ethnic Studies in Philadelphia.     

Archiving Records and Papers of Conservators of Art and Artifacts

ABSTRACT

The records of art conservators are important for many reasons. As people consider artwork a legacy of American culture so too will they also consider the records generated by individuals who have spent their working lives guaranteeing its long-term survival. Conservators and archival repositories need to work together to ensure that records relating to the treatment of art objects in their many forms be retained and made available to researchers generations from now. Some conservators and institutions have already begun to work together, most notably the conservators who have donated their papers to the Winterthur Museum. The American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works and The Getty Conservation Institute organized a two-day roundtable discussion in May 2003, bringing conservators and archivists together to discuss the next steps in archiving the records of art conservators.     

A Study of Student Consultants’ Comfort Levels With Research-Related Tasks

Student consulting is a form of problem-based learning through which students work on strategic issues for organizations. To explore how students perceive their research-related tasks, 15 student consultants were asked to evaluate their comfort levels with seven tasks—adapted from the Association of College and Research Libraries' Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education—in three contexts: class assignments, consulting projects, and future workplaces. The comfort levels revealed by the students have implications for a variety of instructional settings and offer many directions for future studies.     

DEVELOPMENT OF A SUBJECT INDEX IN FORENSIC PSYCHIATRY

Forensic psychiatry, a multi-disciplinary field, presents research problems for practitioners and librarians. Subject indexes for the field cover each discipline separately, making a literature search or current awareness program difficult. The Samuel Bellet Library, located at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, developed its own index to combat this problem. The index provides access to articles in the Library's journals and identifies articles to interest to Library users in other journals. Through monthly updates, distributed to Library users, the index is kept current as are the users. Reaction to the project has been positive; it functions well both as a literature search tool and as a current awareness program.     

Group Projects in Social Work Education: The Influence of Group Characteristics and Moderators on Undergraduate Student Outcomes

This study examined the impact of group size, group formation, group conflict, and division of labor on student outcomes in a group project for a sample of 112 BSW research seminar students at a large university in the Midwest. Students completed surveys on their experiences with the group project at the end of the semester. Multiple regression was used along with analysis of student comments and answers to open-ended questions. Group size was not associated with outcomes. Instructor input into group formation was related to higher self-assessment of student performance. Greater division of labor predicted greater learning, whereas more group conflict predicted less learning; less conflict occurred when students divided tasks in the most equitable way possible. Strengths and limitations of the study are discussed, along with suggestions for improving the group project experience, including preventative measures to reduce conflict.     

OBE: Some Answers for the Uninitiated

In this article, leaders of the North Carolina Writing Project explore whether students of teachers who attended Writing Project summer institutes out-performed other teachers' students on state writing tests. The authors accordingly developed a test to compare the writing of those students with the writing of students of non-writing project teachers. The test, however, produced no significant difference in the writing of the two groups. Seventeen years later, the authors compared the longevity of writing project teachers with that of comparable non-writing project teachers to see if the institutes infused a spirit of professionalism and self-efficacy in participants that other teachers did not possess. This comparison affirmed the authors' beliefs: writing project teachers had greater staying power than comparable teachers.

以天津市现行的"体育、艺术2 1项目"为实证材料,为推进该项目在实验校的有效落实,为其他学校的相关改革与实践提供了有益的启示,为领导决策层与实践执行层提供参考依据,为促进教师形成新的教学理念及提高"学科教育"专业化能力、水平的形成和提升,为更好地促进学生全面和谐的发展,形成健全人格提供有益的帮助.运用问卷调查法、特尔菲法、数理统计法和逻辑分析法对"体育、艺术2 1体育技能类项目"学习领域目标促进青少年全面发展相关内容及数据进行统计分析,并在此基础上对"体育、艺术2 1体育技能类项目"对青少年学生全面发展项目进行了探究性研究.研究结果显示:家长对"体育、艺术2 1体育技能类项目"领域目标关注方面表现了不同的看法;且学生参加"体育、艺术2 1项目"技能大赛对领域目标的影响呈显著性差异.本文时天津市市内部分学校教师、家长对"体育、艺术2 1体育技能类项目"促进青少年学生全面发展最有利项目进行了排位.
