But is My Resource Included? How to Manage,Develop, and Think about the Content in Your Discovery Tool

Implementing discovery tools and getting them to work with existing library services often leaves very little time for their promotion and for the thoughtful, ongoing evaluation and curation of their content. However, the expectations and experiences that users have about discovery tools are often directly related to the content and the way that content is described. In our efforts to work with vendors to resolve the underlying business issues that prevent us from having all of the metadata for our resources included in our discovery tools, we may have lost sight of our role in curating and evaluating the usefulness of the content that is already included in them.

Innovation,Creativity, and Meaning: Leading in the Information Age

Today's fast paced global environment requires information professionals to be leaders keeping pace with user needs. Two academic research libraries share their work seeking to ensure and leverage the creativity in their organizations focusing on the most meaningful innovative opportunities. The premise is that usefulness and appropriateness is achieved through strategic alignment, thereby opening the door of opportunity for innovative products and services. The ability to seize the opportunity each group seeks to meet is due to the recognition by the organization of that alignment. And so, organizational perception, awareness, and value all affect the successful implementation of creativity. The products and services presented in this article, Harvard's Baker Library Historical Collections Online and Purdue University's career wiki, stem from organizational alignment, and the work of the leadership teams to influence perception, create awareness, and demonstrate value.     

A multi-campus usability testing study of the new Primo interface

Abstract

When the 23-member California State University Libraries merged integrated library systems in 2017, a unique opportunity arose to conduct multi-tenant usability testing on user experience in the Primo discovery service, collectively branded OneSearch. In 2018, librarians at five campuses conducted a round of task-based individual user testing on their separate instances, seeking to review individual campuses’ decisions about customizations designed to provide optimal performance of the system and provide insight into group decisions about our shared customization choices. Along with the findings of the test results and recommendations for enhancements to existing modifications, we discuss the challenges and opportunities that are present in conducting multi-campus usability testing and share recommendations for future consortium-based testing efforts.     

Social Robotics and Societies of Robots

The sustainability of social robotics, like other ambitious research programs, depends on the identification of lines of inquiry that are coherent with its visionary goals while satisfying more stringent constraints of feasibility and near-term payoffs. Within these constraints, this article outlines one line of inquiry that seems especially viable: development of a society of robots operating within the physical environments of everyday human life, developing rich robot–robot social exchanges, and yet, refraining from any physical contact with human beings. To pursue this line of inquiry effectively, sustained interactions between specialized research communities in robotics are needed. Notably, suitable robotic hand design and control principles must be adopted to achieve proper robotic manipulation of objects designed for human hands that one finds in human habitats. The Pisa-IIT SoftHand project promises to meet these manipulation needs by a principled combination of sensorimotor synergies and soft robotics actuation, which aims at capturing how the biomechanical structure and neural control strategies of the human hand interact so as to simplify and solve both control and sensing problems.     

基于分层结构CIM网格资源发现和导纳策略

为了解决分层结构基础上网格领域资源发现费用过高的问题,本文提出基于综合指数法(CIM)的网格资源发现与导纳方面的策略,它是一种基于分层结构的网格模型,通过网格工作的执行成本和执行时间综合考虑,对主动声明加入网格的资源的状态从多个属性角度做出综合评价。在顺利进行资源发现的前提下,该策略通过创建相应的次网格来减少网格工作的开支。通过模拟实验环境对其可行性和有效性进行验证。实验结果表明提出的策略可实现计算费用和能力的优化。     

基于Fisher的线性判别回归分类算法

为了提高线性回归分类（LRC）算法的鲁棒性,提出了一种基于Fisher准则的线性判别回归分类算法。利用Fisher准则将类间与类内重建误差的比值最大化,找到线性回归分类的最优投影矩阵;再将训练图像及测试图像投影到各类的特征子空间;求得各训练图像与测试图像间的欧氏距离,最后用K-近邻分类器完成人脸识别。在AR人脸数据库上的实验结果表明,相比其他回归分类算法,算法取得了更好的识别效果。
