AbstractThe amount of merit-based scholarship support for graduate students in the United States has increased dramatically. Given this increased investment, does increasing the size of scholarships awarded to the most academically able admitted students substantially increase their probability of enrollment? We found no support for a positive answer to the question. Our study is unique in the literature in two important ways. First, the design randomly assigned admitted students to size of scholarship. Second, the size of scholarship varied from substantial ($10,000) to substantially larger ($18,500). The applicants in the study were the most academically able applicants to master's programs in a graduate school of education at an elite university. It may be that the difference between no scholarship support and some scholarship support (e.g., $10,000) might have a positive effect on yield. Natural variation data from the same site supported this conclusion. It may be that dramatically larger amounts of scholarship support would have a positive effect on yield as well (e.g., the full cost of tuition). 相似文献

ABSTRACTStudent support at Unisa involves a range of stakeholders providing academic and administrative support. The study was conducted among Unisa BCom honours students. The main objective of the study was to determine the educational quality of teaching and learning offered. Students were contacted by e-mail and asked to complete an online questionnaire. New methods on problem solving, investigating problems and formulating problems were found very useful and students gained independence in developing their learning capabilities. Available resources and supervision were not utilized to the full. Adequate financial aid seemed to be a problem. Support should be optimized and students should realize that all resources made available to them are crucial for their success. Students are of all ages and levels of maturity and have different needs and views regarding their studies. Unisa should endeavour to meet as many of these needs as is practically possible. 相似文献

Abstract E-learning includes the use of the internet for accessing learning materials, interacting with learning content and with instructors and students to obtain support during the learning process in order to gain knowledge and personal meaning and to grow. It occurs when students have electronic access to resources and where they are in regular online contact with their peers and tutors. The primary objective of the metasynthesis was to analyse primary qualitative research studies on learner support in online courses to establish a guideline for e-learning support. The metamethod entailed thoughtful examination of the manner in which the methodological approach was used to gather and interpret the data. The metadata analysis involved reinterpretations of the actual findings from the primary qualitative studies. Lastly, the metatheory consisted of an examination of theories leading the primary researchers’ topics, frameworks and research questions. Conducting a metastudy from a constructivist perspective as in this research meant that I functioned as the interpreter of primary research studies, translating what has been written by other researchers for the purpose of revealing similarities and differences, and developing practice guidelines or theoretical concepts on a specific phenomenon. I identified three main themes regarding student support in e-learning in higher education, technical problems (infrastructure and access), a panic attack (pedagogy) and a human contact (human factors). 相似文献

This study reports the results of a peer observation programme undertaken in the Library and Information Service at Aston University (where the author then worked). The conditions necessary for a successful peer observation programme are listed, and the necessary training is described. The results of the study are discussed in relation to the literature, with particular reference to the benefits of peer observation and the barriers to its implementation. The conclusions drawn from this study are that peer observation is a useful tool for encouraging lecturers to reflect on their own teaching practice, and thus improve the quality of teaching offered. This is true irrespective of the subject being taught. It is however important that the observation takes place in a supportive environment. 相似文献

Case studies regarding institutional change and the mechanisms that drive it provide nuanced views into internal and external organizational dynamics. For decades, journalists in Argentina plied their trade in a context of contentious media–state relations, economic and political instability and organizational directives. As the political environment stabilized and private industry opened, an innovative news organization gained prestige from reporting on high-level scandals. Other, more market-powerful competitors followed suit. However, as democracy continued, declines in the original innovator's watchdog content startled press observers. Other organizations translated changes in different manners. In terms of institutional change, the diffusion of watchdog journalism and then its subsequent organizational re-accommodation reflects ongoing processes of articulation of commercial logics, ideological ideals and state strategies, knotty relations with deep historical ties. 相似文献

This study explores the attitudes and actions of bank managers toward communication spending during recession. Results of this study indicate that organizational leaders cut communication spending early during recession and also erroneously rely on the bank's financials to mitigate irrational customer withdrawals. This research is used to illustrate the need for public librarians to meet the needs of bank stakeholders when their institution ceases to communicate during crises, for academic librarians to educate students in undergraduate and graduate programs regarding heightened information needs during recession, and for corporate librarians to understand a potential avenue for competitive advantage during recession. 相似文献

Sexual harassment remains a persistent workplace problem. The 2017 #Metoo movement and what-have-come-to-be routine news stories about sexual hostility, sexual assault, and sexual harassment in American organizations have opened wounds and reinvigorated public commentary. Although the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission sets forth guidelines for organizations to follow, questions remain about what counts as sexual harassment, and what is an organization’s responsibility in maintaining a harassment-free workplace for its employees. At the invitation of the editor, seven organizational communication scholars responded to a series of questions addressing seven issues related to sexual harassment. These are: sexual harassment policy and training; the responsibilities of bystanders of sexual harassment; organizational culture that provides more support to the harasser than the harassed; the intersection of race with sexual harassment; same-sex harassment and female-to-male harassment; and what can be learned from public movements (e.g. #Metoo).
