Idea generation in biomedical engineering courses using Design Heuristics

ABSTRACT

With increasing demand for improved medical equipment and healthcare, next-generation biomedical engineers need strong design skills. Equipping biomedical engineering students with tools for idea generation and development can increase student design success. Design Heuristics are an ideation tool developed through empirical studies of product designs. While identified in the mechanical engineering space, Design Heuristics may be applicable in biomedical engineering design. In our study, we implemented a Design Heuristics session during upper-level undergraduate and first-year graduate biomedical engineering design courses. We examined the applicability of Design Heuristics within individual and team concept generation contexts. The findings demonstrated that biomedical engineering students were able to use Design Heuristics to generate multiple concepts, and that initial concepts produced using Design Heuristics were carried over into final team design. The results support the applicability of Design Heuristics to student idea generation in biomedical engineering design.     

Identifying needs and enhancing learning about climate change adaptation for water professionals at the post-graduate level

Using a participatory learning approach, we report on the delivery and evaluation of a climate change and risk assessment tool to help manage water risks within the agricultural sector. Post-graduate water-professional students from a range of countries, from both developed and emerging economies were involved in using this tool. Our approach included participative learning tools – group discussion, software, and risk matrices. The materials developed met the needs of the students, allowing these students to incorporate their learning and adapt the package of materials for use in their home countries. Analysis of evaluations show that the tools and materials are particularly useful and emphasizes the need for sound learning materials and tools, funding to deliver training, and policy support to accelerate education and adoption of authentic climate change adaptation practices. The expected benefits for water professionals about climate change will be translated into improved socioeconomic and environmental outcomes if adopted.     

Exploring Uncharted Waters

The importance of Internet resources in public services work is a frequently discussed topic. But access to and effective use of Internet resources is crucial to current and future work of technical services personnel. The workshop examines commonly used Internet procedures and explores Internet tools available for acquisitions and cataloging personnel.     

延安精神对高校思想政治理论课教育教学的启示

延安是中国革命的圣地和新中国的摇篮,也是中国共产党人的精神家园。中国共产党不仅在延安时期实现了马克思主义中国化的第一次历史性飞跃,确立了毛泽东思想的指导地位,而且培育和形成了伟大的延安精神。在党和国家高度重视大学生思想政治教育、进一步加强和改进高校思想政治理论课教育教学的新形势下,弘扬延安精神既是思想政治理论课教育教学的重要内容,也对高质量地开展思想政治理论课教育教学具有深刻的启示和方法论指导。     

轨道交通对城市发展的影响合肥高教园区周边轨道交通3号线建筑群为例

随着社会的发展,轨道交通建筑成为越来越多的建筑设计师关注研究的课题。城市的扩张,土地资源的稀缺共同提出城市轨道交通与建筑群必须立体化。轨道交通在解决交通问题的同时,轨道交通建筑也影响着城市建筑群的发展变化。合肥轨道交通三号线建筑群的建立为新站区周边城市建筑群带来较大影响,我们将从城市规划的角度,梳理轨道交通对城市规划和城市经济发展的影响。     

Zui说上善门－《清明上河图》答问

《清明上河图》中的城门楼，是该图形象体系的组成部分；它是对生活真实的艺术反映，而不是对北宋东京外城上那座上善门的机械摹写。“上善”一词典出《老子》，体现了道家的比德观念。宋太宗以“上善”为城门赐名，主要出于宗教观念。     

"先富"带"共富"仍然是社会主义初级阶段的主导思想

近期部分收入差距拉大的问题引起人们的普遍重视，有的人甚至认为邓小平同志的“先富”带共富的思想过时了甚至失误了。笔者认为，邓的这一思想并没过时，仍然社会主义初级阶段的主导思想。目前的部分收入差距过大现象的产生有其客观现实的原因，与邓小平同志的“先富”带“共富”的思想并没有直接的因果关系。     

试论高校学报的变革与编辑素质

高校学报作为学术交流、技术推广、信息服务的渠道，对推动我国教育事业及学术事业的发展起到了不可低估的作用。但随着市经济体制的逐步建立及各级高校的全方位变革，高校学报也面临着除弊革新的现实，其中，正确定位、办出特色及改变传统办刊模式中存在的弊端应成为高校学报变革的两个重要方面。同时，高校学报的变革对作为学报主体的编辑素质也提出了全新的要求。     

谈课程建设评估

科学合理的课程建设评估,既是课程建设的目标导向,也是课程建设的助推器。课程建设评估应是整体性评估,要落实科学发展观,充分体现人文关怀,树立大课程意识;评估的主体要多元化,评估要与科研评估结合,本着科学、简易、可行和讲求实效的原则,并处理好几个关系。
