Beyond Orientalism in comparative education: challenging the binary opposition between Japanese and American education

This article challenges the common-sense observation that Japanese and American education have been moving in “opposite directions” in recent times. Drawing on postcolonial discourse studies and cultural studies, the article extracts from this observation an Orientalist binary epistemology that continues to set discursive limits on the way Japanese and American observers make sense of each other's education. It is argued that the predominance of this Orientalist binary paradigm in comparative discussions of Japanese and Anglo-American education has resulted in the unfortunate lack of scholarly efforts to take full account of the common global structural changes in education driven by neo-liberal and neo-conservative impulses. As a crucial step towards the critical, reflexive engagement with the continuing colonial legacy, this article proposes a structurally oriented research paradigm that enables us to discuss localised and nationalised differences in education changes within the common frame of global structural changes in economy, state and education.

The future of higher education in Ireland: a postcolonial perspective

The transformation that Irish higher education (HE) has undergone since the mid-2000s has been particularly rapid and unidirectional. Following the Global Financial Crisis, the Irish Government sought to take control of tertiary education in an attempt to shield the country from future economic shocks. This paper succinctly discusses the circumstances leading to the current policy position and what these changes have meant for Irish HE. A postulation that neoliberalism will inevitably deepen further within Irish HE will be explored through the lens of Postcolonial theory. In conclusion, I will show that the application of this theoretical stance may succeed in buffering many of the effects of neoliberalism to ensure ample space in HE for all subject areas and disciplines.

奈保尔小说《米格尔街》描写的男性对家庭暴力的使用和受害者的不同应对态度,共同折射出殖民体系中主/奴、殖民者/被殖民者的二元对立关系,但女性对家庭暴力——尤其是言语暴力的使用,则完全颠覆了后殖民语境中的两性关系和父权统治。归根结底,殖民主义对殖民地国家的经济剥削是造成被殖民者在生存压力下诉诸家庭暴力的深层次原因。     

后殖民理论与中国民族文化的发展

后殖民理论在中国并不限于狭义的文化领域,而是和世界民族独立、政治意识形态、社会文化思潮等具有血缘纽带的联系,中国学界对后殖民理论的关注更倾向于为本民族文化生存危机的焦虑和警惕。后殖民理论对于中国民族文化发展的启示在于揭示了西方殖民主义从军事、政治向文化转移的政治阴谋,警醒发展中国家审慎吸收外来文化。但是,经济全球化的历史背景以及中国民族文化的自身特点,又使得该理论在中国的实践遇到新的难题和困惑,其具体体现在文化结构的四个层面上。因此,我们对于后殖民文化理论自身又需要保持必要的反思和质疑。     

Towards decolonial praxis: reconfiguring the human and the curriculum

ABSTRACT

This theoretical inquiry applies threads of Sylvia Wynter’s intellectual project to scholarship in curriculum studies to consider how Wynter’s insights might urge new potential in educational theorising and practice. The central concern driving Wynter’s intellectual project is that our present understanding about what it means to be human is entrenched in epistemological legacies of colonialism that preserve a Western bourgeois genre of Man. This essay begins by detailing Sylvia Wynter’s rigorous and innovative intellectual project that reworks the category of the human. We argue that contemporary curriculum is based upon this Western genre of the human and explore the limits of multicultural curricula. Synthesising Wynter’s interrelated lines of thought – how the notion of being hybridly human calls forth a conceptualisation of humanness as a collective act – we argue that her revised category of the human is a necessary means to radically reimagine and decolonise curriculum.

著名华裔美籍戏剧家黄哲伦的《蝴蝶君》在中国学界广受注目,这些评论绝大多数声称取后殖民批评的角度,但其实却可说无一例外地背叛了后殖民批评的一个重要维度——身体,使得这里的所谓的后殖民批评等同于民族主义的反殖民批评。《蝴蝶君》实际上呈现了身体在文化冲突中的游离性与离心力。因为这场文化冲突对身体这个中介与境域的严重依赖,"身受"冲突的"帝国主义者"法国人高与他所"代表"的力量之间存在着既依存又背离的关系。在文化对抗产生的罅隙中,他的身体实现了自体自根的快乐,引导他挣脱了帝国与权力的话语控制。     

英语帝国主义论批判

英语帝国主义一般指英语霸权地位。语言帝国主义的论调和"世界英语"研究者的思维逻辑大相径庭。由于英语全球化,除了带来英语的变体增多以外,还带来另外一种声音,就是要遏制英语的霸权,保护语言生态。而这种英语扩展的现象并非帝国主义阴谋,语言死亡的责任也非英语全球化带来的结果。     

斯皮瓦克后殖民女性主义批评思想解析——以斯皮瓦克对第三世界女性差异性分析为路径

斯皮瓦克是后殖民女性主义批评浪潮中的代表人物。她关注统治结构中被边缘化的他者,主张不能因为民族、性别、肤色等因素而放弃文化批评的权力,并通过策略性本质主义的批评策略来颠覆性别的、文化的、种族的等级秩序。斯皮瓦克对第三世界女性差异性的分析,揭示了白人女性主义者的特权意识和帝国主义权力话语的霸权本质,实现了对第三世界女性的再认识。斯皮瓦克的批评思想和方式为我们研究西方或白人文学提供了一种新视角与新方法。
