Identifying engaging features of schooling: assessing the psychometric soundness of student-generated research

In this article we report on data analysed from a student project about attitudes to school and student perception of engagement and disengagement. The data were collected by students in an Australian study that employed the Young People as Researchers model. Middle year students devised and administered a questionnaire to students in grade 8, 9 and 10 at a secondary school in Australia. A total of 239 students completed the questionnaire. The students completed the initial analysis, which was followed by a more detailed analysis by the authors of this article. The findings support the work of American, British and Australian researchers about the factors that influence engagement and disengagement from schooling. The reported outcomes from the student work and the secondary analysis indicate that students do have the capacity to undertake valid and meaningful research and can make informed contributions to school improvement and student engagement.     

Student teachers’ development of a positive attitude towards research and research knowledge and skills

The aim of this study is to investigate the experiences of student teachers participating in an introductory course, designed to stimulate the development of a positive attitude towards research and to stimulate the development of research knowledge and skills by second-year student teachers of an institute of primary teacher education. A questionnaire (N = 81) was used to measure the students’ attitude and perceptions of the development of their attitude towards research, their perceived development of research knowledge and skills and what parts of the introductory course they perceived to be responsible for these developments. According to the students’ perceptions, the introductory course contributed to the development of both a positive attitude towards research and research knowledge and skills. The students indicated that examples from practice, authentic learning tasks and working in pairs or groups contributed most to the development of their attitude, knowledge and skills.     

Introducing bedside handovers: changing practice on a coronary care unit

This article outlines a potential problem a sister in a coronary care unit had in relation to introducing a change to the use of bedside handovers which involved the patient. Action research as a means of supporting the participants in the change process is explored and a rationale for choosing a particular action research approach is provided. Its implementation, progress and the eventual outcome are described along with a critique of the process. Recommendations in relation to the utilisation of bedside handovers in critical care areas and the support provided to nurses wishing to review and change practice are made.

Nineteenth-Century Journalism Online—The Market Versus Academia?

In a climate of fear about funding for libraries and the arts, the preservation of many periodicals and newspapers is under threat. Digitisation is therefore justifiable as a conservation directive however what of those volumes that are not chosen? Are we creating an alternative version of Victorian culture through so selective a gaze? Indeed, who is choosing these titles? There is a question of access, both of what material is available to digitise and also what it is perceived ‘the audience’ want. However, a further question is raised—who are ‘the audience’? What are these archives going to be used for? This article will examine the different forms of nineteenth-century periodical and newspaper archives that are available, how they are organised and who their perceived audience is, before going on to consider the pedagogical utility of such sites. How can we enhance students' understanding of nineteenth-century culture by using these archives in our lecture theatres? And if we do, what are the implications for research in the future?     

Action Research,Assessment, and Institutional Review Boards (IRB): Conflicting Demands or Productive Tension for the Academic Librarian?

This article puts forward an “assessment/action research/publication” cycle that integrates aspects of the assessment, research, and Institutional Review Board (IRB) processes to provide academic librarians with a systematic approach for balancing competing workplace demands and give library managers a roadmap for creating a “research culture” (Jacobs, Berg, and Cornwall) within their libraries. The article argues that librarians and library managers have much to gain by integrating action research into librarians’ everyday work loads, including increased ease in meeting publication demands for tenure and/or promotion, institutionalizing habits of reflective practice across all library service areas, and overall library improvement.     

科研人员的个体特征对其诚信行为的交互影响研究

论文通过构建行为选择模型,依托Netlogo仿真平台进行仿真实验,以获得实验数据,然后采用描述统计分析的方法研究科研人员的个体特征好奇心、创造性和探索性精神、独立性和自主性三者之间的动态交互影响效应。分析结果表明：好奇心、创造性和探索性精神、独立性和自主性对诚信科研人员数量均值有显著的正向交互影响,对诚信科研人员数量标准差有显著的负向交互影响;好奇心、创造性和探索性精神、独立性和自主性都处在最高水平时,科研人员选择诚信行为的概率并不是最高;好奇心、创造性和探索性精神、独立性和自主性之间存在协同促进作用。     

中国科研人员的国际流动趋势研究

[目的/意义] 在规范化和重构中国科研人员ORCID履历的基础上,深入分析中国科研人员的国际流动趋势及特点,为国家人才政策的制订提供实证依据。[方法/过程] 充分利用科学文献的作者关联信息,采用数据挖掘方法实现中国科研人员个人履历的重构,并从地理区域分布、流动模式、时间趋势和流动效益等视角,深入地讨论他们的国际流动趋势。[结果/结论] 随着中国科技创新水平的提升,中国人才流动模式逐渐呈现多元化趋势。中国与"一带一路"沿线国家形成人才环流态势,近5年人才回流趋势显著,中国迎来留学生回国就业的高潮。但整体上看,中国人才流失的现象依然严重,对优质人才的吸引力较弱,主要表现为中国科研人员的引进和流失数量失衡,人才内外交流的质量存在一定提升空间。     

图书馆学及其对象的层次结构研究

关于图书馆学及其对象研究,应在图书馆学对象、图书馆学研究者、图书馆学的关系基础之上寻求研究者的视域融合。按照图书馆学研究者的认识层次的划分,图书馆学对象有本体论、认识论、方法论层次,相应图书馆学学科也呈现现象学、元学、方法学层次或形态。从根本上讲,图书馆学对象是所谓"图书馆性",图书馆学呈现现象学形态,是对图书馆现象的本质、内在联系、社会功能、发展规律等方面认识成果的系统化和理论化。这种系统化和理论化是图书馆学人对图书馆发生发展现象的理解与解释。     

Participatory research with teachers: toward a pragmatic and dynamic view of equity and parity in research relationships

Participatory research in education provides an opportunity for university-based researchers to collaborate with teachers to develop understandings and to overcome the school?university and research?practice divides. Several studies illuminate the challenges inherent in conducting participatory research within the institutional context of schools, particularly in achieving a truly equitable research relationship. The purpose of this paper is to argue for a more pragmatic and dynamic view of equity and expertise between school- and university-based collaborators. Elaborating examples from a partnership with teachers at the elementary level, this paper illustrates the complex power dynamics that existed between university- and community-based stakeholders. It points to the need to work with and against existing power structures to co-create multiple and shifting positions of expertise that keep the learning communities open and alive for the promotion of transformative educational practices.
