Exploring the reliability of generic and content-specific instructional aspects in physical education lessons

Heightened accountability pressures and an increased emphasis on teaching quality have directed scholarly attention to scrutinizing instruction, particularly with respect to issues of validity and reliability. However, these attempts have largely been directed toward “core” content areas and investigated generic or content-specific instructional aspects separately. Focusing on a less explored area, physical education, and concurrently attending to both instructional aspects, in this exploratory study, we examined whether the optimal lesson-rater combination needed to obtain reliable teaching-quality estimates differs depending on the type of instructional aspects considered. Data analysis of 147 lessons using generalizability theory suggested that either a 3-lesson-2-rater or a 4-lesson-1-rater combination yields sufficiently reliable estimates for nearly all dimensions examined (generic or content specific). Quality of student practice, however, required 11 lessons scored by 2 raters. These findings underline the importance of examining individual dimensions within a given observational instrument and the merit of carefully selecting and training raters.     

The End of Public Schools? Or a New Beginning?

Abstract

Public education is becoming increasingly privatized as private philanthropic organizations, such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and corporations, such as Pearson, dominate the policy-making process, and more students enroll in publicly funded but privately administered charter schools. The privatization of education results from the dominance of neoliberal ideals promoting market competition, individualism, and standardized testing. In response, we call for replacing neoliberalism with social democratic policies emphasizing community, trust, and democratic deliberation.     

系统思维视域下高职院校“三全育人”的差异化构建路径

高职教育作为高等教育的一种特殊类型,应借助系统思维寻找“三全育人”这一系统工程的差异化构建路径。当前,高职院校“三全育人”探索存在着路径依赖,系统整体意识缺乏;人员、过程、方位等系统要素存在缺位;过度分工严重,系统结构优化滞后,没有形成系统效应。高职院校应打破“三全育人”路径依赖,明确以培育“工匠精神”为特色的系统整体目标;推动“三全育人”高职化,填补人员、过程和方位缺失产生的育人盲区;优化系统的“软”“硬”结构,实现高职院校“三全育人”的系统创新。     

Where is the engineering I applied for? A longitudinal study of students' transition into higher education engineering,and their considerations of staying or leaving

This paper presents results from a qualitative longitudinal study of students' transition into higher education engineering. The study aims at comparing upper-secondary school students' expectations of engineering with their actual experiences when encountering the engineering programme. It explores how this encounter provides a platform for students to become integrated during first year. We find that students' expectations are poorly met by their first-year study programme. In their attempt to bridge the gap between their expectations and their experiences, the students apply three strategies: some endure the gap, some constantly try out different study strategies and some compromised their expectations and identities to become more aligned with the study programme. The findings show that even when students successfully manage to bridge the gap, their strategy may turn out to be counterproductive from a learning point of view. The implications of the study are discussed.

Abstract

This article examines national conservative political advocacy groups' growing interest in local politics, and analyzes how they form alliances and gain political power. Following efforts to restrict collective bargaining for Wisconsin public employees, Kenosha school board members' attempts to legally protect teachers' rights provoked concern from nationally financed conservative groups. This article discusses why a small-town school board election attracted such attention, and the significance of increased attention to the local by these national groups.
