Our contemporary moment is characterized by the pervasiveness of economics in social life, and the extension of “incentives” into new areas represents this movement’s keystone. Originally a fairly narrow term from neoclassical economic theory, politicians, journalists, and cultural ?gures deploy “incentives” to explain all manner of activity: judicial rulings, gendered wage gaps, and even whether soccer players score penalty kicks. To address this, I elucidate the trope of metastasis – the rhetorical mechanism by which social life is “economized.” Metastasis entails a ?gurative displacement, wherein cause shifts from one place to another. More than simply a spread of narrow economic ideas into culture, incentive rhetoric metastasizes. It displaces alternative explanations onto neoclassical market axioms. Since its proponents insist that incentives are causal mechanisms, I introduce Jacques Lacan’s interpretation of Aristotle’s discourse on causality. Lacan rereads Aristotle’s “?nal cause” from a rhetorical perspective, and forwards the retroactive causality of the symbolic order. Incentive rhetoric exempli?es this concept, in which all outcomes are explained as having been caused by a prior, unseen market force. Incentive rhetorics promise a universal code that unlocks the mysteries of human behavior that reduces all context to discrete individual choices, thereby providing a discursive alibi for economic inequality. 相似文献

This case examines how functionalist approaches manifest culturally based on users’ contexts. The authors conduct a critical visual semiotic analysis of the race and Hispanic origin questions on the 2010 U.S. Census form, demonstrating how incongruities in design potentially harm people. What happens to writing instructors’ feedback when they use a common rubric and an online tool to respond to student papers in a first-year composition course at a large state university in the United States? To investigate this question, we analyze the 118,611 comments instructors made when responding to 17,433 student essays. Using concordance software to quantify teachers’ use of rubric terms, we found instructors were primarily concerned with global, substantive, higher-order concerns—such as responding to students’ rhetorical situations, use of reason, and organization—rather than lower-order concerns about grammar or formatting. Given past research has determined teachers overemphasize lower-order concerns such as grammar, mechanics, and punctuation (Connors and Lunsford, 1988, Lunsford and Lunsford, 2008, Moxley and Joseph, 1989, Moxley and Joseph, 1992, Schwartz, 1984, Sommers, 1982, Stern and Solomon, 2006), these results may suggest the possibility of a generational shift when it comes to response to student writing. Aggregating teacher commentary, student work, and peer review responses via digital tools and employing concordance software to identify big-data patterns illuminates a new assessment practice for Writing Program Administrators—the practice of Deep Assessment. 相似文献

Multi-feature fusion has achieved gratifying performance in image retrieval. However, some existing fusion mechanisms would unfortunately make the result worse than expected due to the domain and visual diversity of images. As a result, a burning problem for applying feature fusion mechanism is how to figure out and improve the complementarity of multi-level heterogeneous features. To this end, this paper proposes an adaptive multi-feature fusion method via cross-entropy normalization for effective image retrieval. First, various low-level features (e.g., SIFT) and high-level semantic features based on deep learning are extracted. Under each level of feature representation, the initial similarity scores of the query image w.r.t. the target dataset are calculated. Second, we use an independent reference dataset to approximate the tail of the attained initial similarity score ranking curve by cross-entropy normalization. Then the area under the ranking curve is calculated as the indicator of the merit of corresponding feature (i.e., a smaller area indicates a more suitable feature.). Finally, fusion weights of each feature are assigned adaptively by the statistically elaborated areas. Extensive experiments on three public benchmark datasets have demonstrated that the proposed method can achieve superior performance compared with the existing methods, improving the metrics mAP by relatively 1.04% (for Holidays), 1.22% (for Oxf5k) and the N-S by relatively 0.04 (for UKbench), respectively. 相似文献
