The Home Play of Toddlers with Disabilities: Contexts and maternal perspectives

A multiple case‐study design was used to explore the spontaneous play of three toddlers with disabilities as it emerged in the course of everyday activity in the home. Children were observed at home playing independently and with their mothers. Data consist of videotaped naturalistic observations in the children’s homes and mothers’ perspectives of their child’s play obtained in semi‐structured interviews. There was a great deal of similarity in the playful behaviour of toddlers and their mothers. Toddlers were active players throughout all daily routines and their play reflected their developmental level. Mothers actively supported their children’s initiative and engagement in play and they spoke of play as a highly valued behaviour. Some qualitative differences were noted in child and mother–child play, which seemed to relate to the nature of the child’s disability and developmental level. Further study of the play of young children with disabilities in naturalistic settings and ways that mothers and other caregivers value and support child play is recommended.     

On ‘developing a framework for critical science agency through case study in a conceptual physics context’

This paper provides a review of research that examines the development and expression of agency in and through high-school physics. The interchange offers realizations and questions brought to mind by the reading of the research and provides written comments connected to specific sections of the paper germane to my own theoretical perspective. Within the context of this commentary, raised issues are discussed in a dialogic manner in order to elucidate deeper understanding concerning the empirical investigation presented in the study. As a final point, a brief synopsis is put forward regarding some of the contributions that studies such as the one reviewed have to offer for providing equitable access to science for all students.

从超级巨型大学到一流开放大学——中国广播电视大学30年发展历程回顾与未来展望

今年是中国广播电视大学而立之年,它已经走过了30年辉煌而曲折的历程,由初创期的快速发展和繁荣,转而由开放趋于封用而走入低谷,继而恢复改革开放而获得新的生机,近10年以开放教育试点项目参加高校现代远程教育工程试点而再造辉煌.本文在回顾中国电大30年发展历程的基础上展望未来,指出"从超级巨型大学到一流开放大学"的转型是中国电大在21世纪初叶的战略发展目标,是中国实现"由人口大国到人力资源强国"的国家发展战略的重要组成部分.     

Recycling Piaget: Posthumanism and making children’s knowledge matter

A growing body of research incorporates children’s perspectives into the research process. If we are to take children’s perspectives seriously in education research, research methodologies must be capable of addressing issues that matter to children. This article engages in a theoretical discussion that considers how a posthuman research methodology can support such an effort. Piaget’s early and lesser known qualitative studies on children’s conception of the world are re-read along with Karen Barad’s posthuman theory, using Catherine Malabou’s concept of plasticity. Through a plastic reading of Piaget and Barad, I consider how a posthuman theoretical framework might contribute to research seeking to access children’s perspectives. Before concluding, I reflect on some ethical concerns regarding posthuman research in education.     

多维视野观照下的成人教育本质探析

成人教育本质是亘古至今见仁见智的问题,但又是成人教育学中不可回避的话题。成人教育本质到底探讨“是（is）”抑或“应该是（oughttobe）”？该文作者认为二者皆为成人教育本质诉求的个中之义。从此立场出发,以“人的形象”为讨论的基点,从哲学、社会学和文化学等多学科的视角审视成人教育,成人教育本质表现为：成人教育是促使人“人性化”、“社会化”、“文化化”的活动。     

Friendships for wellbeing?: parents’ and practitioners’ positioning of young children’s friendships in the evaluation of wellbeing factors

ABSTRACT

Friendship matters for young children’s development, learning and experience of wellbeing. This paper emphasises the significance of young children’s friendships for their wellbeing, especially in the context of early years settings. Findings are presented from two online questionnaires developed for the project, in which 155 parents/carers and 285 practitioners in England expressed their perceptions of what matters for young children’s wellbeing. Data shows some ambivalence in the views of both parents/carers and practitioners about the importance of friendship in this context. Both groups gave low prioritisation to ‘the company of friends’ for children’s wellbeing. As friendships are of central importance to young children themselves, this could suggests that adults and children may have different priorities, which raises questions about the extent to which young children’s friendships are seen as important by adults. The paper concludes by proposing the need for practitioners in particular, but also parents, to consider their roles and priorities for children’s lives within schools and nurseries, including how they might sensitively support and facilitate children’s friendships in play, activities, transition and everyday life.     

Simulation in Higher Education: A sociomaterial view

This article presents a sociomaterial account of simulation in higher education. Sociomaterial approaches change the ontological and epistemological bases for understanding learning and offer valuable tools for addressing important questions about relationships between university education and professional practices. Simulation has grown in many disciplines as a means to bring the two closer together. However, the theoretical underpinnings of simulation pedagogy are limited. This paper extends the wider work of applying sociomaterial approaches to educational phenomena, taking up Schatzki’s practice theory as a distinctive basis for doing so. The question ‘What is being simulated?’ is posed, prompting discussion of multiple bodies, performances and experiences. The potential of adopting such a framework for understanding simulation as a pedagogic practice that brings the classroom and workplace together is illustrated with reference to clinical education in nursing.     

《嘉莉妹妹》——一种结构主义的解读

运用西方文论中的结构主义批评理论对西奥多.德莱塞的《嘉莉妹妹》进行解读,即运用兹韦坦.托多罗夫的结构主义语法范畴理论解读小说中人物的“追寻”主题;运用二元对立法解读作品中存在的二元对立及其深邃涵义;从视点和视角的角度解读小说的艺术手法。通过从结构主义批评理论的以上三个方面,对《嘉莉妹妹》进行解读,强调对这本小说的复义性与多层次性的理解和认识。     

Enhancing student engagement through practice experience in social work education: the Social Work Studio

It can sometimes be difficult to engage students in ‘real life experiences’ within the classroom. In one Bachelor of Social Work program, the development of a Social Work Studio (the Studio) has provided students with opportunities to engage in simulated social work practice in a safe and supportive environment. This article reports on a small exploratory study of students' responses to a survey that sought their views and reactions to the development of this Studio initiative. Findings were analysed from a sociocultural perspective. They indicate that students' responses to the development of the Studio reflect their emerging constructions of the cultural world of social work.
