Gender Representation in Children's Language Arts Computer Software

Abstract

Two sets of software developed for early reading instruction (top rated and best selling) were reviewed and evaluated for gender portrayal of central and secondary characters of the opposite sex. Male central characters were present in 37% of the top-rated computer software and in 63% of the best selling software. Female central characters were observed in 16% of the top-rated software and 11% of the best selling software. The lack of consistency between children's software requires further investigation. In a more positive vein, when central characters and secondary characters of the opposite sex were compared for salient characteristics that could be classified as sex role stereotyping, no differences were observed.

This paper identifies issues and concerns relating to implementation and expansion of electronic reserve services in a multiple library setting, and offers possible solutions to common problems, as well as the benefits of centralization.

Technological Literacy: A Framework for Teaching Technical Communication Software Tools

Understanding technological literacy for technical communicators is crucial for effective pedagogy in technical and professional communication. Challenges of teaching technical communication students the functions and concepts of workplace software include the number of rapidly changing applications, a desire to focus on education over training, limited faculty expertise in software, limited resources for teaching software, and a desire to focus on technical communication principles. To address these challenges, the authors explore how to use a four-level framework of technological literacy along with existing resources to design a course to help students use, understand, and evaluate technical communication technology.     

Student computer attitudes,experience and perceptions about the use of two software applications in Building Engineering

The purpose of this study was to examine students’ computer attitudes and experience, as well as students’ perceptions about the use of two specific software applications (Google Drive Spreadsheets and Arquimedes) in the Building Engineering context. The relationships among these variables were also examined. Ninety-two students took part in this study. Results suggest that students hold favourable computer attitudes. Moreover, it was found a significant positive relationship among students’ attitudes and their computer experience. Findings also show that students find Arquimedes software more useful and with higher output quality than Google Drive Spreadsheets, while the latter is perceived to be easier to use. Regarding the relationship among students’ attitudes towards the use of computers and their perceptions about the use of both software applications, only a significant positive relationship in the case of Arquimedes was found. Findings are discussed in terms of its implications for practice and further research.     

Educational affordances and learning design in music software development

Although music software has become increasingly affordable and widely adopted in today’s classrooms, concerns have been raised about a lack of consideration for users’ needs during the software development process. This paper examines intra- and inter-sectoral communication pertaining to software development and music education to shed light on the improvement of the educational affordances for music software in classroom teaching and learning. Semi-structured interviews with music software developers (n = 3) and music teachers (n = 15) are used to gain insights into how to enhance the educational affordances of music software. The findings of this study fill a gap in the literature by detailing the knowledge exchange required to effectively develop music education software. Improving the synergy between the knowledge bases of software development and music education could enhance novel educational affordances, providing music teachers with the opportunity to develop new, pedagogically sound music teaching and learning activities.     

基于DS12887的一种新型智能节水系统研制

智能有效的节水系统研制对于我们倡导的可持续发展有着重要的意义,本文介绍了一种自适应节水系统,阐述了系统的硬件和软件设计方法,该系统以DS12887为时钟芯片,以89S52单片机为核心,实现了手动放水、红外模式、定时模式和软件防冻等自适应控制功能,并且附加了控制器上的时钟显示功能.该系统经过试运行,性能稳定,能有效地节水且符合卫生要求,适于高校沟槽式公厕节水系统的应用和推广.     

对“中国古代有无知识产权制度”争议的思考——《窃书为雅罪》读后

宋代印刷术发达之后出现了与版权制度类似的出版审查制度,但是这并不能说明中国古代已经产生了知识产权制度。事实上,知识产权制度在任何古代国家都不能产生,知识产权制度是伴随着市场经济的发展,"知识"开始具备财产性因素时产生的,它是一个近代的范畴。在中国百年来知识产权被动立法的背景下,尽管知识产权被动调整的思路有其缘由,但是从长远角度看,应该加强知识产权保护,这不仅是因为国际社会的压力,更是出于自身发展的需要。     

基于对应分析的旅游动机行为模式的实证研究

以全国6个旅游热点城市抽样调查数据为依据,应用对应分析方法及SPSS统计软件对不同职业入境游客的旅游动机做了定量分析,结果表明游客旅游动机存在一定的趋向性和规律性,大多数游客以观光旅游和休闲度假为主,但由于游客职业的不同旅游动机也存在一定的差异,呈现多样化的倾向.     

用于AFTN与ATN互联的网关技术研究

讨论AFTN向ATN过渡的实施办法,采用OPNET网络仿真软件对其中的过渡方案和构造方法进行仿真,给出其链路利用率和吞吐量的仿真结果,并对其性能进行分析。
