Underwhelmed and playing it safe: newly qualified primary teachers’ mentoring and probationary-related experiences during induction

Framed within the burgeoning policy and research literature on teacher induction internationally, this paper focuses on the mentoring and probationary-related experiences of nine newly qualified primary teachers in the Republic of Ireland, during the course of their initial year of workplace practice, post-graduation. Gleaning newly qualified teachers’ (NQTs’) perspectives on these matters is opportune, as the Teaching Council’s new model of induction entitled Droichead (bridge in Irish) is envisaged to become the sole induction and probation route for all NQTs. Transacted during the 2010/2011 school year, when the induction and probationary arrangements in place were those that the Droichead initiative is intended to replace, a three-cycle, individual interview design facilitated continuing contact with each NQT. Selected, representative interview data are utilised to illustrate the dynamics of NQTs’ experiences of mentoring and probationary-related processes. Empirically based findings establish, firstly, beginner complicity in the transaction of narrowly conceived mentoring support; secondly, enamorment of the reifications of initial teacher education-phase teaching practice when negotiating probationary processes; thirdly, the valuing of techniques that respond to immediate, probationary-related requirements over more complex forms of practice; and fourthly, the inevitable and essential interconnectedness of mentoring and probationary processes. The paper concludes with implications for the design and implementation of induction programmes.     

英国研究生教育证书制度对我国高师教育实习的启示

高师教育实习是高师课程体系的一个重要组成部分,是师范学生初步熟悉和适应真实的教育教学环境并在教育教学实践中具体运用所学理论知识的一个十分重要的环节。所以教育实习的目标、内容、实施形式、管理及考核评估等都直接影响着教师教育的质量。英国研究生教育证书制度是英国在教师教育改革过程中探索出的一套全新的师资培养模式。它具有以下几个特点:1、以中小学为基地,理论知识学习与教育教学实际培训相结合;2、实习时间较长且分散;3、实习内容丰富且贴近教育教学实际;4、师资培养的规格较高且质量较好。这种特别注重对师范生进行教育教学实际能力培养的师训模式可以为我国的高师教育实习改革提供诸多借鉴。     

Precursors to probation and parole agent intent to send informational,emotional, and esteem social support messages to female clients

Supervising agents serve as sources of social support for over one million women in the US on probation and parole who strive to avoid recidivism. Little is known about the supportive messages agents intend to provide their female clients or their precursors. The optimal matching model of social support is used in an investigation of the precursors to agents’ intent to send different types of social support messages to the women they supervise. Results indicated that supervising agents intended to provide informational support in the form of suggestions or advice, esteem support in the form of compliments, and emotional support in the form of encouragement to the women. Both agent communication pattern and offender level variables were precursors to the intent to send informational support messages, but only agent communication pattern variables predicted the intent to send emotional support messages.     

论我国缓刑管理的完善

缓刑的成败关键在于缓刑的管理。本文针对我国缓刑管理存在的问题,借鉴国外缓刑管理的成功经验,提出调整缓刑管理主体,明确缓刑管理者职责,完善缓刑管理的内容,改进缓刑管理的方法与措施,完善缓刑管理的有关程序等。     

A University-Based Literacy Service-Learning Program for Youthful Offenders on Probation: A Preliminary Study of the Program’s Development,Implementation and Feasibility

This article reports on the development, implementation and feasibility of a mid-Atlantic university-community service-learning literacy program for youth on probation. Undergraduate teacher candidates served as literacy instructors for the youth. We focus on benefits and administrative challenges of developing and implementing a preliminary service-learning program for probated youth living in the community. We analyzed focus group data collected from special education undergraduate instructors, interview data collected from probated youth and their case managers, pre-post literacy assessments administered to the youth, the youths’ court files and data maintained by the community-based agency. We conclude that our model of a university-community literacy partnership has the potential to raise reading performance of youth, motivation, and promote prosocial behaviors. Addressing the educational needs of youth on probation, however, is complex and multifaceted. We find that success requires consistent communication among all stakeholders, adequate funding for leadership, organization and curricula, and ongoing assessment and evaluation.     

以反思促发展 --新教师试用期培训模式初探

反思是教师自我发展的重要机制,培养教师的反思能力是提高教师职业素养的重要途径。为此,我们构建了“反思型”的新教师试用期培训模式,该模式突出了新教师反思意识、反思习惯和反思能力的培养,强调合作与信任,重视新的教师的教育教学实践活动,主张运用多种反思手段,促进新教师不断反思自己的教育教学实践活动,使新教师获得良好的适应与发展。     

教育实习“一体化”改革的实践和探索

通过对328位师专生参加第一，二次校外见习活动情况的调查表明，在师范院校实习模式改革中，教育见习是学习实践锻炼，增强学生师范意识，提高教育实习质量的有效途径。
