This longitudinal investigation examined word decoding and reading comprehension measures from first grade through sixth grade
for a sample of Spanish-speaking English language learners (ELLs). The sample included 261 children (average age of 7.2 years;
120 boys; 141 girls) at the initial data collection in first grade. The ELLs’ word decoding and reading comprehension scores
showed quadratic growth over the course of the study. The sample’s reading comprehension, but not their word decoding, began
to fall behind the normative sample starting in the third grade. Phonological awareness, rapid automatic naming (RAN), and
oral language measures were used as predictors and correlated with growth rates in a manner consistent with past research. 相似文献

There is a need for effect sizes that are readily interpretable by a broad audience. One index that might fill this need is π, which represents the proportion of scores in one group that exceed the mean of another group. The robustness of estimates of π to violations of normality had not been explored. Using simulated data, three estimates of π (π? direct, r, and rrobust) were studied under varying conditions of sample size, distribution shape, and group mean difference. This study demonstrated that r and rrobust were biased estimates of π when data were nonnormal. We recommend that neither be used in estimating π unless data are normally distributed. 相似文献

This paper provides a preliminary picture of teacher–student interaction in Korean senior high schools. In order to do this, the Questionnaire on Teacher Interaction (QTI) was translated into Korean and administered to 439 students (99 science-independent stream students, 195 science-oriented stream students and 145 humanities stream students). Based on the results from this survey, interviews with some students and teachers were also carried out and three science classrooms were also observed. It was found that the teacher–student interactions in Korean senior high school science classrooms reflect the general image of the youth-elder relationship in society as well as the senior high school's unique nature – portraying a scene of directing teachers and obeying students. It was also found that students experience unique interactions in their science classrooms with their particular teachers. It was considered that this difference comes from the overlapping of a teacher's personal characteristics with the nature of a stream (e.g., curriculum, expectation towards the students in that stream). This article reports part of a larger study conducted with Korean senior high school students and teachers. The aim of the main study was to investigate three different aspects of the high school science classroom environments in Korea, namely, the degree of implementation of constructivism, the pattern of teacher–student interactions, and the learning environment in laboratory classes. Based on the realisation that teacher–student interactions have not been systematically dealt with especially at the senior high school level in Korea, this article pays particularly attention to this aspect. Multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) is widely used in educational research to compare means on multiple dependent variables across groups. Researchers faced with the problem of missing data often use multiple imputation of values in place of the missing observations. This study compares the performance of 2 methods for combining p values in the context of a MANOVA, with the typical default for dealing with missing data: listwise deletion. When data are missing at random, the new methods maintained the nominal Type I error rate and had power comparable to the complete data condition. When 40% of the data were missing completely at random, the Type I error rates for the new methods were inflated, but not for lower percents. 相似文献

This paper is based on a recently completed three‐year research project undertaken with staff and students at one department of education studies in a university in England. We explored the reasons given by students for enrolling in a degree‐level programme in Educational Studies, reviewed their experiences and perceptions during their studies and made comments about career destinations. Only some of the findings that emerged from the project are reported here. Through a process of data collection undertaken in depth at one institution, and analysis in the context of literature and publicly available reports about similar work in other institutions, we illuminate some issues concerning the nature of degree programmes in Educational Studies. 相似文献
