UCF Library Express: Assessing a Faculty Delivery Service

As it becomes increasingly difficult to demonstrate the worth of the library to the academic community, gate counts and usage statistics are no longer enough. Showing the impact the library has on the community requires planning new services with outcome measurement from the start. This article outlines a plan for assessing the impact of a faculty book delivery service at the University of Central Florida's John C. Hitt Library. It includes a review of outcome measurement and other relevant literature, the service goals and outcomes, and a data plan for demonstrating and communicating the outcomes. This article is the third in a series of three articles that together make up an entire project planning and management document that is based on Rhea Rubin's (2006) Outcome Measurement model. The plan in its entirety provides an example of how to apply the Outcome Measurement model in an academic library setting.     

Empire Express: Case Study of a New York State Resource Sharing Model

ABSTRACT

The article presents a case study of Empire Express, a resource sharing network among the libraries of the State University of New York (SUNY) University Centers at Albany, Binghamton, Buffalo, and Stony Brook, along with Syracuse University. The network involves an expedited interlibrary loan service, in which requests and documents are transmitted via Ariel and books are delivered by UPS, The service was formed in 1993, based upon an analysis of interlibrary loan patterns which revealed considerable potential for equitable resource sharing among the SUNY University Center Libraries. Syracuse University, as a peer institution with complimentary collections, later joined the network, which is formed on the “miniature cooperative” resource sharing model. With data now available about Empire Express, it is possible to assess the service and gain insight about the “miniature cooperative” model as a strategy for equitable resource sharing.

Cloudy with a Chance of Open Source: Open Source Integrated Library Systems and Cloud Computing in Academic Law Libraries

Integrated library systems (ILSs) have been fundamental to library workflow in both technical services and public services for decades. However, many of the proprietary ILSs currently on the market do not provide law libraries with the flexibility and adaptability necessary to keep pace with advances in technology. Some law libraries are considering abandoning proprietary ILSs and implementing one of the nascent open source ILSs that have sprung up in the last few years. As the lines blur between hardware and software, many organizations are trading in-house information technology infrastructure and personnel for full-service cloud hosting. This article examines these trends for those contemplating a move to an open source ILS and/or cloud computing.     

Hospital Libraries in West Germany:

This article presents a study on reference services in German hospital libraries. Information for the study was obtained through personal interviews conducted at four libraries in Stuttgart, West Germany in August 1985. A detailed questionnaire covering services provided, staff training, and use of computers was used during the interviews. While reference services are minimal at the libraries in this study, the commitment to patient library services in Germany is exceptional.     

ClinicalKey 2.0: Upgrades in a Point-of-Care Search Engine

ClinicalKey 2.0, launched September 23, 2014, offers a mobile-friendly design with a search history feature for targeting point-of-care resources for health care professionals. Browsing is improved with searchable, filterable listings of sources highlighting new resources. ClinicalKey 2.0 improvements include more than 1,400 new Topic Pages for quick access to point-of-care content. A sample search details some of the upgrades and content options.     

Marketing Journals:

The purpose of this study is to determine the comprehensiveness and composition of university library holdings of marketing journals for three types of university library holdings of marketing journals for three types of institutions: schools that offer a doctoral degree program in marketing; non-doctoral degree programs in marketing offered at schools accredited by the AACSB; and non-doctoral degree programs offered at non-AACSB accredited schools. The results offer useful information for university librarians and marketing educators responsible for making journal acquisition and discontinuation decisions.

The era of incremental change in the technology innovation life cycle: An analysis of the automotive emission control industry

According to the life cycle model of technological evolution, after the emergence of a dominant design, technological product industries undergo an “era of incremental change.” This era of incremental change is not well understood in the existing literature. Although the period is typically characterized in terms of stability and minimal innovation, we find that the era of incremental change can be actually quite dynamic. Through our research into the period of time following the emergence of a dominant design in automotive emission control systems, we find that the overall product innovation in the industry did not decline immediately following the dominant design, and increased throughout the era of incremental change. Further, we find that firms maintain their attention on the same core components that they innovated upon before the dominant design, but that these components make up less of the overall proportion of total innovation throughout the era of incremental change. Finally, we found that the concentration of innovating firms in the industry increases immediately following the dominant design, and this concentration decreases over time throughout the era of incremental change. Findings imply a pattern of contraction and expansion in the era of incremental change that extends previous work on the technological product life cycles and helps to characterize the era of incremental change in a novel way.
