A passion for portraits: Elizabeth Cay's pastels

Elizabeth Cay (1771–1831), the grandmother of the Scottish physicist James Clerk Maxwell (1831–1879), was a talented amateur pastellist; several of her pastel portraits survive as does her set of pastels. She studied with Archibald Skirving (1749–1819), a Scottish miniature painter who later in life turned to larger-scale portraiture in pastel and served as drawing master to the Edinburgh elite. Cay's pastels are not fabricated sticks but consist of powdered pigment housed in various glass and ceramic containers and were apparently applied by stumps, still in her workbox, or brushes. The Cay color samples were identified by spectrographic analysis, polarized light microscopy, and microchemical tests which, in addition, indicated that a number of pigment mixtures present gave specific hues in keeping with earlier treatise accounts of the preparation of a pastel gamut for practical use. Elizabeth Cay's pastel workbox may be rare surviving evidence of one way, more common that we appreciate today, in which amateurs, and perhaps professionals, practiced pastel painting.     

DNA-Computing – ein funktionales Modell im laborpraktischen Experiment

Zusammenfassung.   Im Zentrum der Betrachtungen zum DNA-Computing steht die Frage nach den Chancen und Grenzen dieses neuen Berechnungsmodells, nachdem in den letzten Jahren eine rasante Entwicklung auf das Thema aufmerksam machte. Neben beachtlichen theoretischen Untersuchungen zum “Rechnen im Reagenzglas” werden auch laborpraktische Implementierungen favorisiert. An der TU Dresden wurde in interdisziplin?rer Arbeit ein Integer-Rucksackproblem mittels eines DNA-Algorithmus im Labor gel?st und dabei eine Vielzahl molekularbiologischer Operationen analysiert. Mit Hilfe dieses Satzes von Operationen gelang eine universelle und labornahe Modellierung des DNA-Computing. Hierbei angewandte Techniken und Methoden werden vorgestellt und bewertet. Die Beschreibung des DNA-Algorithmus zeigt, wie sich Einzeloperationen vorteilhaft zu Operationsfolgen zusammensetzen lassen und gemeinsam mit einer geeigneten DNA-Kodierung der Eingangsdaten zur L?sung des Problems im Labor führen. Erstmalig wurden hierbei natürliche Zahlen verarbeitet. Die Arbeitsgemeinschaft DNA-Computing Dresden konzentriert sich auf Aufgabenstellungen, die formale Modelle des DNA-Computing mit überzeugenden Laborimplementierungen verbinden. Eingegangen am 14. 为了使桥式起重机的寿命管理措施更切合实际，必须提高桥机的强度和刚度测试的精度。文中提出了现场测试中可以采用的一些提高精度的措施和方法。     

GM（1，N）－2模型及其在机器运行状态预测中的应用

根据现场特点，提出灰色非等间隔优化模型—ＧＭ（１，Ｎ）－２模型，对机器运行状态进行预测。并根据滨海轮的实测信号，对模型进行了检验。     

'The Writers' Zone': A Study of the Impact of Targeting Verbal Reasoning on Student Performance and Behaviour

‘The Writers' Zone’ project took place in an 11–18 mixed comprehensive in south‐east Essex. It involved 16 Year 7 boys identified as having a high level of performance in non‐verbal reasoning but low levels of performance in verbal reasoning. They were isolated from normal lessons for a fortnight to follow an alternative curriculum focusing specifically on writing. This article details the structure of the project and evaluates its success in accessing writing potential.

INNOVATION AND HEALTH EXPENDITURES: SOME EMPIRICAL RESULTS FOR A DIAGNOSTIC TECHNOLOGY

There is debate on whether the adoption of new medical technologies has been a contributing factor to rising health expenditures. This literature is critically reviewed and another approach is advocated. This alternative approach rests on the distinction between product and process innovations. It is argued that the relationship between innovations and health expenditures can be illuminated, for process innovations, by determining if they are used as substitutes. The empirical results provide no indication that alternative technologies for diagnosing diseases/conditions of the upper gastrointestinal tract have been utilised by Australian medical practitioners, operating on a fee-for-service basis, as substitutes. The study provides new empirical support for the view that medical innovations contribute to rising health expenditures.
