ABSTRACT

This paper focuses on how an academic library managed changes in services and space to meet customer needs for streamlined services, increasing efficiency for students, faculty and staff in finding, analyzing, sharing, and producing knowledge. The Ohio State University's John A. Prior Health Sciences Library (PHSL) has merged its circulation and reference desks into one service point, added technology-based services, updated software and hardware on public workstations, and placed more emphasis on a variety of educational offerings. These changes save customers' time and effort by minimizing the need to obtain assistance at multiple service points. This paper provides a review of resulting improvements and customers' use of services and spaces.  相似文献

Changes presented by cloud computing—shared computing services, applications, and storage available to end users via the Internet—have the potential to seriously alter how libraries provide services, not only remotely, but also within the physical library, specifically concerning challenges facing the typical desktop computing experience. Libraries have invested time and money in establishing an infrastructure to support a particular kind of computing experience, and advances in cloud computing may make this type of experience obsolete. One of the ways libraries have added value to their services has been by implementing library commons. A key component to these commons has been desktop computing. Cloud computing offers applications via a Web browser, meaning that the applications can run independently of the local hardware and operating system, calling into question the necessity of traditional desktop computing. As libraries have shown in the past, they have the capability to assess challenging situations and adapt to provide users a beneficial experience.  相似文献

以“公地悲剧”为分析的起点,阐释了地方政府在分权体制下的行为选择对城市扩张带来的影响,并采用静态和动态面板数据模型,以财政包干阶段和分税制阶段的分省份面板数据(1985年-1992年和1999年-2008年)为基础,进行经验研究和比较分析.不同分权阶段的模型估计结果表明:不同阶段地方政府为增长而竞争的努力对城市扩张的影响并没有发生变化,起到正向的推动作用;不同阶段财政分权体制对城市扩张的影响存在差异,财政包干阶段的影响为负,而分税制阶段的影响为正,在影响程度上支出分权大于收入分权.现阶段,需要中央政府通过“做对激励”和“做对协调”的相关政策措施来改变地方政府的行为取向,从而实现合理的城市扩张.同时,本文还发现,土地市场建设有利于减缓城市扩张的速度;滞后一期的城市扩张对当期的城市扩张存在正向影响.  相似文献

[目的/意义]将社交媒体应用于高校图书馆虚拟学习共享空间,探索其助力虚拟学习共享空间快速发展的有效途径,以践行图书馆服务由"以信息资源为中心"向"以学生学习为中心"的转变。[方法/过程]设计以QQ、微信等大学生喜爱善用的在线交流媒体为工具,以"学生服务团队"、主题驱动、多方协同、用户评价等为要素,构建、组织、管理虚拟学习共享空间的机制,并将这种机制应用于一个以"汽车"为主题的虚拟学习共享空间进行了实践研究。[结果/结论]实证研究和用户评价表明,以社交媒体作为工具构建高校图书馆虚拟学习共享空间,适合当下大学生个性化学习的需求;优化"学生服务团队"是其有效运行的关键因素;主题驱动和多方协同提升了其吸引力及其内涵,大学生学习成效显著,参与踊跃。  相似文献

Although the term lacks a standard definition, learning commons represent academic library spaces that provide computer and library resources as well as a range of academic services that support learners and learning. Learning commons have been equated to a laboratory for creating knowledge and staffed with librarians that serve as facilitators of learning. Many of these spaces evolved over time with the addition of campus partners and services. In this article, the authors examined the literature on academic library learning commons to identify common themes. A qualitiative analysis of 103 articles identified five themes including: planning the learning commons, assessing the learning commons, benefiting from the learning commons, collaborating in the learning commons, and staffing the learning commons. Foremost, the review pointed to the increasing popularity of learning commons in academic institutions. To that end, it remains critical that librarians possess the capabilities necessary to support students, faculty, and staff in these next generation learning spaces. Some of these capabilities include traditional library skills, but librarians' computer literacy, including familiarity with web 2.0 technologies, and their knowledge of instructional design remains important too.  相似文献

This article uses Google Scholar (GS) as a source of data to analyse Open Access (OA) levels across all countries and fields of research. All articles and reviews with a DOI and published in 2009 or 2014 and covered by the three main citation indexes in the Web of Science (2,269,022 documents) were selected for study. The links to freely available versions of these documents displayed in GS were collected. To differentiate between more reliable (sustainable and legal) forms of access and less reliable ones, the data extracted from GS was combined with information available in DOAJ, CrossRef, OpenDOAR, and ROAR. This allowed us to distinguish the percentage of documents in our sample that are made OA by the publisher (23.1%, including Gold, Hybrid, Delayed, and Bronze OA) from those available as Green OA (17.6%), and those available from other sources (40.6%, mainly due to ResearchGate). The data shows an overall free availability of 54.6%, with important differences at the country and subject category levels. The data extracted from GS yielded very similar results to those found by other studies that analysed similar samples of documents, but employed different methods to find evidence of OA, thus suggesting a relative consistency among methods.  相似文献

The current generation of millennial university students is more accustomed to searching reference information online than visiting the physical library facility, compared to the previous generations of students. Studies have shown that the role of the physical library facilities as a mere collection point of reading and reference materials is being threatened by the availability of free and high-speed online search engines. University libraries have always been an integral part in higher education learning activities, and they are not exempted from this threat. Based on a structural equation modelling framework, we analysed empirically the importance of different library design features that help enhance students' learning satisfaction, and found that lighting environment, acoustic environment as well as location of the library building were the main determinants impacting on the use of the university library by students in a major university in China. We conclude the paper with our suggestions in modifying library design to accommodate students' learning needs, and more importantly in recon?uring the spatial and functional role of university libraries in this age of digital information from a mere provider of reference materials to a physical space of learning commons on campus.  相似文献
