Giving Patrons What They Want: An Analysis of a Thesis and Dissertation Purchase-on-Demand Project at East Carolina University

Joyner Library's Interlibrary Loan Department has been purchasing theses and dissertations that it could neither borrow from other libraries nor find freely available online to fulfill patron requests. Purchased documents are reviewed by Collection Development for possible accession after the patron has finished consulting the works. The background, interlibrary loan process, collection development process, and technical services process are discussed. Summary data and analysis are presented.     

The accuracy of references in PhD theses: a case study

Background

Inaccurate references and citations cause confusion, distrust in the accuracy of a report, waste of time and unnecessary financial charges for libraries, information centres and researchers.

Objectives

The aim of the study was to establish the accuracy of article references in PhD theses from the Tehran and Tabriz Universities of Medical Sciences and their compliance with the Vancouver style.

Methods

We analysed 357 article references in the Tehran and 347 in the Tabriz. Six bibliographic elements were assessed: authors' names, article title, journal title, publication year, volume and page range. Referencing errors were divided into major and minor.

Results

Sixty two percent of references in the Tehran and 53% of those in the Tabriz were erroneous. In total, 164 references in the Tehran and 136 in the Tabriz were complete without error. Of 357 reference articles in the Tehran, 34 (9.8%) were in complete accordance with the Vancouver style, compared with none in the Tabriz. Accuracy of referencing did not differ significantly between the two groups, but compliance with the Vancouver style was significantly better in the Tehran.

Conclusions

The accuracy of referencing was not satisfactory in both groups, and students need to gain adequate instruction in appropriate referencing methods.

Possibilities of International Diffusion and Documentation of Scientific Innovations by Communication Satellites

A study of the attitude of students towards the Use of Library course which involves library orientation/bibliographic instruction and user education was conducted during the 1988/89 academic session. Use of Library is one of the courses taught in the general studies programme which has been going at Bendel State University for 4 years. The object of the study was to test whether students liked the Use of Library course, whether they found it useful, whether it should continue to be compulsory or be made optional, and the impact of the programme. The result of the study is highly positive. The respondents found the course very useful both in academic work and in social life. The respondents were ambivalent as to whether the course should continue to be compulsory or be made optional. The administration of the programme is delineated. Suggestions are made for the improvement of the course.

研究目的在于帮助读者掌握学术论文摘要的写作方法，提高摘要写作质量。采用典型实例分析法，剖析了学术论文摘要写作的要求与方法。应采用第三人称，围绕论文主旨，将摘要写成一篇结构完整的小短文，并善于根据学术论文的类型与篇幅决定摘要写作的具体方式。摘要的写作要素包括研究目的、研究方法、主要结果与结论，各要素的表述要详略得当。     

对1999-2004年全国优秀博士学位论文文后参考文献的统计与分析

本文利用文献计量学的方法对1999-2004年17个理工学科的全国优秀博士论文参考文献进行了数据统计与相关分析,并对一些问题提出了建设性意见。     

2006年《情报科学》载文、作者与引文统计分析

运用定量分析的方法，通过对2006《情报科学》407篇论文的选题内容、摘要、作者、引文等方面进行统计分析，并与《情报科学》近几年的有关统计数据对比，从中得出该刊的特点和发展规律，为其今后的发展提供参考数据。     

2002-2004年《情报科学》载文、作者与引文统计分析

本文运用文献计量学的方法，选取2002-2004年《情报科学》中的1223篇学术论文，从载文、作者及引文等3个方面进行统计分析，得出《情报科学》3年来发展的一些规律及特点。
