“Ah,I know why…”: children developing understandings through engaging with a picture book

This article describes part of a study that explored the responses of nine‐ and ten‐year‐old children during a picturebook read aloud in a small group setting in a New Zealand classroom. The read aloud was interactive, where the participants were encouraged to respond to the book and to each other throughout the session. The authors created a framework for analysing the responses, adapting the model of Lawrence Sipe (2008) with its five categories of literary understanding, by expanding on the analytical category to enable a finer analysis of the responses. This article discusses the children's depth of thinking and the understandings they developed as they engaged with the read aloud. It also describes how the adapted framework allowed a closer analysis of these understandings, including the way the elements of art used in the illustrations contributed to the children's ideas. The findings suggest ways picturebooks can be used to promote children's thinking and how teachers can guide discussion about a complex text. Implications for use of the framework in further research are discussed.     

Beyond the Classroom: Fostering Soft Skills in Pre-Professional LIS Organizations

Are LIS graduates being adequately prepared to work in the information workplace? While students are absorbing valuable knowledge, library school curricula do not foster the essential soft skills students need to thrive in their post-graduate careers. However by being an active member of a graduate student organization, future LIS professionals can gain and hone effective soft skills, such as communication, initiative, curiosity, understanding, and the means to deal with mistakes, while adopting responsibilities that will all ultimately translate to success in the professional workplace, particularly in their first positions following graduation.     

Impact of age on haematological markers pre- and post-marathon running

This study investigated whether haematological markers differ between young and masters marathon participants, running at similar performance levels. Nine young (31.89 ± 4.96 years) and eight masters (63.13 ± 4.61 years) runners participated. At five time points (pre-race through 54 h post-race), a complete blood cell count, basic metabolic panel and creatine kinase (CK) isoenzyme panel were assessed. Race performance was standardised using the World Masters Association Age Grading Performance Tables. Total CK levels were elevated for all participants at all time points post-race (P < 0.001). The CK-isoenzyme MB% was elevated across groups at 6, 30 and 54 h post-race (P < 0.01, P < 0.01 and P < 0.05), with masters runners having a higher CK-MB% at 30 and 54 h (P < 0.05, P < 0.05). Total white blood cell and neutrophil counts were elevated through 6 h post-race (P < 0.001), with higher levels found in younger runners (P < 0.001). When considering all blood work, masters runners had a higher number of abnormal values at 6, 30 and 54 h post-race (P < 0.05, P < 0.01 and P < 0.05). In conclusion, masters runners demonstrated sustained CK-MB elevation, which may suggest greater cardiac stress. However, future studies using additional cardiac markers should be completed to confirm these findings. In addition, masters runners showed an increased number of laboratory values outside normal range, indicating the body’s reduced capacity to respond to marathon running.

大学生对流行语的知晓度、理解度调查与分析——以江西师范大学为例

年度流行语最能反映当年的社会语言生活状况,以江西师范大学为例调查当代大学生对"2010年度中国媒体十大流行语"的了解情况。整体上,大学生对流行语还算比较熟悉,但有些类型的差异,从人群特征来看,男生、大四学生、艺术类学生对流行语相对更熟悉一点;从流行语涉及的领域来看,大学生最熟悉的流行语是环保类、综合类、体育类、社会生活类、灾害类,最不熟悉的是科技类、国际时政类、经济类、国内时政类。     

“培根问题”及其诠释学意涵

“培根问题”是波普尔在批判培根经验论及其“偏见”观的基础上首次提出的。波普尔不仅将内涵于培根哲学中“偏见”与“观察证实理论”的矛盾、冲突称为“培根问题”,而且经由对传统“观察证实理论”的颠覆性分析,提出并系统论证了与培根不同的、旨在通过正面肯定理论或“偏见”对“观察证实理论”的作用、强调“一切观察都是按照某种理论对事实的解释”,从而消解理论与经验观察之矛盾、冲突的方法。波普尔关于“培根问题”的提出及其解决,无不与其哲学内涵有丰富的诠释学思想密切相关。

教育现象学是一门追求教育生活中具体现象的学问,悬置成见、回归生活和反思性理解,是教育现象学的三个重要关键词。从教育现象学角度观照,应试教育存在的主要问题包括:教师讲授对悬置的忽视,标准答案情结对学生生活世界的遮蔽,缺乏师生对教材、他者与自我三者关系的反思性理解;课程改革的路径选择包括教师精通教材与悬置的运用,教师主动倾听让学生的生活世界得以显现,教师运用教学机智推进学生关于教材、他者与自我三者关系的反思性理解。
