Video diaries: a tool to investigate sustainability-related learning in threshold spaces

This paper takes as a case study an undergraduate field class from a UK university to rural Uganda. It describes and evaluates the use of video diaries as a tool for investigating the process of transformative learning in the context of education for sustainability. The applicability of threshold concept theory to this learning is investigated. Results show the video diary technique to be much more successful in capturing the development of student learning than written diaries. Despite some practical difficulties, rich data were generated. Analysis demonstrated that learning met three of the five criteria for threshold concepts: the learning was transformative, integrative and troublesome. Further research could test whether the learning in this case study met the threshold concept criterion of irreversibility. Further elaboration of the theoretical relationship between threshold concepts, transformative learning and education for sustainability is also needed. It is concluded that the video diary method is potentially transferable to other educational research contexts and may be particularly suitable for researching learning in threshold spaces.     

3DV quality model based depth maps for view synthesis in FTV system

Video retargeting using optimized crop-and-scale

Mobile devices are increasingly powerful in multimedia transmitting and browsing. However, the small screen and different aspect ratios of mobile devices lower visual quality while watching images or videos. Video retargeting is aim at fitting an existing video into arbitrary size and aspect ratio. Previous content-aware retargeting methods are mostly high computational cost, which limits their applications on the portable devices with low computation ability. In this paper, a new crop-and-scale approach is presented to adapt video to better suit the target display. We automatically find the optimal parameters of cropping window using the dynamic programming method, and then scale it to fit the target display. The cropping window can smoothly shift during a shot to follow the movement of important objects. The retargeting results using our approach introduce no deformation and jitter effects over the whole video. Experimental results show the success of our approach on adapting a variety of source videos to small display sizes.     

简论我国的罪刑法定原则

罪刑法定原则是现代刑法的根基。它是对罪刑擅断主义的彻底否定。这一原则自资产阶级启蒙思想家提出至今，已成为不同社会制度的世界各国刑法中最普遍、最重要的一项原则，甚至成为国际人权公约的内容，成为一种国际化趋势。我国的罪刑法定原则是在摈弃了类推制度之后于1997年新刑法中正式以立法形式予以确认的。其价值内涵和内在要求，在新刑法中得到了较为全面、系统的体现，是我国社会主义民主法制建设的重大进步。     

Language use in kindergarten science lessons: language production and academic language during a video feedback coaching intervention in kindergarten science lessons

This paper aims to gain insight into language production and academic language of 4- and 5-year-old students and their teachers in the course of a teacher intervention during kindergarten science education. The study is based on videotaped classroom observations, and specifically focuses on the academic language use of students (N_intervention = 18, N_controls = 26) and teachers (N_intervention = 5, N_controls = 5). The results suggest that this general teacher intervention yields interesting changes in language use and production. Patterns of change over time confirm the idiosyncratic and non-linear nature of these changes. Science lessons represent an appropriate context in which to acquaint students with academic language, which can be used as a basis to build upon more sophisticated language skills.

Developing local oral reading fluency cut scores for predicting high‐stakes test performance

This study evaluated the classification accuracy of a second grade oral reading fluency curriculum‐based measure (R‐CBM) in predicting third grade state test performance. It also compared the long‐term classification accuracy of local and publisher‐recommended R‐CBM cut scores. Participants were 266 students who were divided into a calibration sample (n = 170) and two cross‐validation samples (n = 46; n = 50), respectively. Using calibration sample data, local fall, winter, and spring R‐CBM cut scores for predicting students’ state test performance were developed using three methods: discriminant analysis (DA), logistic regression (LR), and receiver operating characteristic curve analysis (ROC). The classification accuracy of local and publisher‐recommended cut scores was evaluated across subsamples. Only DA and ROC produced cut scores that maintained adequate sensitivity (≥.70) across cohorts; however, LR and publisher‐recommended scores had higher levels of specificity and overall correct classification. Implications for developing local cut scores are discussed.
