1980年以来,中国近代乡村救济史的研究重新为学术界所关注。学者们的目光主要集中于乡村建设、救荒救难、慈善事业等几个方面,并取得了丰硕成果,不足之处主要集中在研究水平不高、区域研究严重失衡、史料未能充分挖掘。     

陈文龙由抗元英烈到三种神灵研究

南宋末,陈文龙就被视为岳飞的代身。文章通过有关事例研究从元以来,陈文龙相继成为杨公太师(陈公太师)、水部尚书、福州府城隍三种神灵,前两者为民间私谥,第三者为敕封,影响达到莆仙、台湾、福州、冲绳、杭州与东南沿海等地。     

Science, Society, and Technology—Three Cultures and Multiple Visions

The article reviews the strikingly divergent viewpoints of intellectuals—scientists and non-scientists—about Science and Technology. It shows that while scientists implicitly accept the difference between Science and Technology, to non-scientists that difference is irrelevant. The most important differences between Science and Technology that lie in their relative scales, outputs and accuracy of predictions are highlighted. The complexity of and difficulty in trying to quantify the contribution of science and technology to economic growth are discussed. Views of science and technology that include their societal perceptions are recommended.

根据全军各大战区开展海上武装泅渡的训练情况,结合武装泅渡本身的规律特点,对现代战争中应用武装泅渡的前景进行了研究。结果表明:武装泅渡在现代战争中的作用虽然已被先进的武器装备、战术理论等因素削弱了,但是它作为一种战术手段、练兵途径仍然具有不可替代的重要价值。     

文明的冲突——《高卢战记》中的高卢战争

古罗马著名军事家与政治家凯撒在他的《高卢战记》中记述了罗马共和国末期进行的高卢战争。高卢战争的实质是不同文明在高卢地区彼此遭遇而发生的冲突,在冲突之中,正处于社会转型期的高卢人战败,其自发的社会转型被迫终止,最终在罗马人的统治下逐渐实现了向农耕社会的转型。     

"To Keep the Present and Future in Touch with the Past"- Lewis Wickes Hine:

Lewis Wickes Hine exploited the powerful impact of the visual image to arouse the reforming spirit among the middle and upper classes and to inspire them to do something about the living and working conditions of thousands of America's poor. Hine was acquainted with many of the men and women who were involved in the Progressive social reform campaigns that were popular in the United States during the early twentieth century. A trained sociologist, he became interested in photography while teaching at the Ethical Culture School. Hine quickly realized that photographs could be powerful instruments of social reform and was able to effectively combine his interests in social welfare and photography. Hine believed that this efforts as a photographer should be guided by a social conscience and referred to his work as "social photography." His photographs of men, women and children enduring dangerous and inhuman working conditions were both sensitive and intense. As a result of his social conscience and artistic commitment Hine raised the cultural and social awareness of his contemporaries and made a significant contribution to social reform efforts in the United States.     

A Need for Improved Teacher-Training A Necessity for Future Academic Preparation and Employment

This article considers how to bridge the achievement gap by showing that reading methodology influenced American educational philosophy, primary-grade curricula, and American schools. It considers the impact of the romantic movement on progressive education and notes that the current academic achievement gap has two roots. The first can be traced, in part, to the nonacademic excesses of progressivism in the early grades; the second to patterns of social disorganization. The article argues that schools can deal with each problem by returning to a more academic curriculum and by providing a more nurturing environment for students.     

The new geopolitics of educational aid: From Cold Wars to Holy Wars?

The paper explores shifts in the nature, volume, trajectory and content of aid to education in the wake of post-9/11 Western preoccupations with the rise of Islamic radicalism. The paper develops a framework for understanding the dynamics of how educational aid appears to be becoming increasingly politicized in strategic conflict and post-conflict countries. The approach links up with broader debates within the field of development studies on the ‘militarization of development’ while attempting to shed light on the specificity of how ‘educational aid’ becomes caught up in these processes. The paper argues that particularly in Iraq and Afghanistan educational aid is becoming submerged under the counterinsurgency strategy of the Western occupying forces with detrimental effects not only for long-term development progress but also for the personal security of development workers.
