Accountability through access,authenticity and advocacy when researching with young children

ABSTRACT

Research with children involving their use of digital and mobile technologies either as a methodological tool or in relation to their learning foregrounds emerging ethical issues and practices. This paper explores some of the ethical and practical challenges we faced in studies involving the recruitment of young children as research participants, and where the integrity of these research collaborations was critical. We propose an ethical framework to foreground these challenges that is shaped by a view of children as social actors and experts on their own lives, information and communication technologies as ubiquitous in children’s lives, and ethics as a situated and multifaceted responsibility. This framework has three aspects: access, authenticity and advocacy. We draw on examples from different research projects and use ethically important moments to illustrate how notions of access, authenticity and advocacy can foreground the ethical challenges in teaching–learning research contexts to better consider and offer children greater agency in research collaborations.     

Writing Self-Efficacy in Young Children: Issues for the Early Grades Environment

The intent of this study was to examine young children’s perceptions of writing self-efficacy (Grades K–1). Most research studies find a significant relationship between self-efficacy and achievement in older students (Grades 4–16). Research has also shown that children are affected by personal perceived self-efficacy. Therefore, self-efficacy can affect young learners as well. There are few self-efficacy studies among young learners, especially kindergarten and first grade. This study was conducted to determine if young learners could describe their writing self-efficacy and, if so, how student perceptions compare to teachers’ and researchers’ perceptions.The data showed that participating students from kindergarten and first grade could describe their writing self-efficacy. Several characteristics of children with high and low writing self-efficacy are discussed. Comparisons between teachers’, researchers’, and children’s perceptions of writing self-efficacy showed consistency with 14 of the 18 student participants.     

幼儿英语家庭教育模式的个案研究

幼儿英语学习是一种启蒙教育。研究表明,在汉语环境下,在家庭中实施幼儿英语教育是可行的。培养幼儿的英语兴趣、突出培养听说能力、以听为主说为辅的教学实践符合幼儿的生理和心理特点,符合语言学习的规律。家长可以充分利用幼儿生活作为教学内容,给幼儿读讲故事,合理利用动画片、网络及电视上的儿童英语节目,为孩子创造良好的英语环境;在与孩子的交流中,激活孩子通过各种途径习得的语言,能培养其基本交际能力。幼儿英语家庭教育模式的个案研究对学校的幼儿英语教育、幼儿英语的师资培养等方面都有很好的启示作用。     

网语浅析

运用网络这种先进科技的人们，说的话却常常夹杂着大量古老的，不规范的或不符合社会主流的词语，作为一种化现象，话语的选择投射出生活理念的迁移，网民对现实中流通的某些词语的拒绝，只是想呈示一种猖不羁的自由姿态，作为青年亚化的网络语言现象，体现的是一种新的时代特征，这种不成熟但又富于创新性的化现象，未必能够改变我们的语言，但却积极参与着未来的语言发展。     

Gender variance and educational psychology: implications for practice

The area of gender variance appears to be more visible in both the media and everyday life. Within educational psychology literature gender variance remains underrepresented. The positioning of educational psychologists working across the three levels of child and family, school or establishment and education authority/council, means that they are well placed to support knowledge, understanding and practice in this area. The literature highlights the importance of the terminology around gender variance, the differing representations of gender variance and the potential impact upon young people. Three practice examples demonstrate potential roles for educational psychologists and together with the literature highlight possible implications for educational psychology practice.
