‘Next thing you know,her hair turned green’: absurdity and uncertainty in high-stakes teacher test space

This article explores what happens behind the closed doors and in the ‘black box’ of high-stakes educational testing. Our specific concern is licensure exams that are often gatekeepers into teacher education programs and the profession. Leveraging the spatial turn across critical social theory and other disciplines, we conceptualize the test space of these exams in order to account for the powerful reach that test companies have into teacher education and the ‘ideal’ restrictive space that test takers navigate. Against this conceptual background, we share findings from a larger qualitative study to illustrate how test takers ‘practice’ test space into something more manageable and familiar by leveraging various affordances presented to them. Overall, our study accounts for the spatial dimension of high-stakes educational tests and initiates productive ways to begin thinking about the structure and agency of these spaces.

Fast mode decision for inter macroblocks in H. 264/AVC

In this paper, a fast mode decision algorithm for inter macroblocks in H.264/AVC is proposed, The algorithm is able to classify all modes by both gradient operator and comparison of space-time correlation. Because only part of modes is used to compare with each other the computational complexity can be reduced greatly. The simulation results show that it takes about 75 % of encoding time for other algorithm with similar visual quality.     

A situation-based flipped classroom to improving nursing staff performance in advanced cardiac life support training course

ABSTRACT

The Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) training aims to help nurses establish the basic competence of the comprehension of electrocardiograms (ECG/ EKG). However, learners usually have difficulty memorizing the meanings of different EKG waveforms, which could represent clinical symptoms or even the feeling of dying, via traditional instruction. Some serious problems could lead to death if the nursing staff do not make correct judgments and provide timely treatment. Thus, this paper reports an explorative study investigating the effects of a flipped classroom approach on nursing staffs’ ACLS learning achievement. A 2-week experiment was conducted to compare the learning achievement of the nursing staff who learned with the ACLS situation-based flipped classroom approach to those who learned with the ACLS traditional flipped approach. The experimental results show that the nursing staff who learned with the proposed approach had better learning achievements, motivation, and satisfaction than those who learned with the ACLS traditional flipped approach.     

Petrochemical wastewater treatment with a pilot-scale bioaugmented biological treatment system

In solving the deterioration of biological treatment system treating petrochemical wastewater under low temperatures, bioaugmentation technology was adopted by delivering engineering bacteria into a pilot-scale two-stage anoxic-oxic (A/O) process based on previous lab-scale study. Experimental results showed that when the concentrations of COD and NH4 -N of the influent were 370~910 mg/L and 10~70 mg/L, the corresponding average concentrations of those of effluent were about 80 mg/L and 8 mg/L respectively, which was better than the Level I criteria of the Integrated Wastewater Discharge Standard (GB8978-1996). According to GC-MS analysis of the effluents from both the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) and the pilot system, there were 68 kinds of persistent organic pollutants in the WWTP effluent, while there were only 32 in that of the pilot system. In addition, the amount of the organics in the effluent of the pilot system reduced by almost 50% compared to that of the WWTP. As a whole, after bioaugmentation, the organic removal efficiency of the wastewater treatment system obviously in- creased.
