Press Credentials and Hybrid Boundary Zones: The Case of WorldNetDaily and the Standing Committee of Correspondents

ABSTRACT

Press credentialing practices are a vital, yet understudied site of scholarly research on journalistic norms and practices. Press credentialing not only structures internal professional hierarchies, but they also signify the boundaries of the journalistic field itself. This paper explores the legal and theoretical implications of press credentialing to cover the United States Congress, drawing on the concepts of boundary work and journalistic authority to demonstrate the material impact of the space between fields on professional legitimation in journalism. Using WorldNetDaily (WND) as a case study, I argue that the Standing Committee of Correspondents (SCC) occupies a hybrid boundary zone between the journalistic and political fields, generating a unique tension in First Amendment jurisprudence that places journalists in a paradoxical role as both the professional embodiments of free speech and its constitutional steward. The resulting jurisdictional conflict between the SCC and WND extends the relational model of journalistic authority by articulating how journalist-state relations can fundamentally augment the process of legitimation at its fuzzy boundaries. The relevance and implications for press credentialing practices in the digital age are discussed.

[目的/意义]安全问题是当前国家、政府、企业、社会、大众及学界广泛关注的一个重要现实问题，而安全情报是保障安全的必用之宝，故安全情报研究具有十分重要的理论与现实意义。[方法/过程]运用文献分析法和思辨法，从安全科学学理角度出发，论证基于安全科学视角解读与界定安全情报概念的必要性、重要性与紧迫性，探讨安全情报概念的由来与演进趋势，并分析安全情报的涵义。[结果/结论]从安全科学学理角度看，从安全信息到安全情报的安全管理新认识是提出安全情报概念的根本动力，安全情报概念的总体演进趋势是从分散到统一。同时，从系统安全学角度看，安全情报是指所有影响系统安全行为的安全信息。

微博时代:90后大学生的政治意识现状及对策研究

微博是90后大学生进行政治意识表达的主要载体,大学生的政治意识在某种程度上影响着社会大众的思想意识。在微博的影响下,大学生政治意识的主流虽然是积极、健康、向上的,但也出现了政治冷漠,盲目轻信甚至是群体极化的现象。因此,政府应该加强微博立法,高校应开设公共微博,培养一批意见领袖,而大学生也要努力提高自己的微博素养,才能保证微博上政治意识表达的有序运行。     

Mapping migrant vernacular discourses: Mestiza consciousness,nomad thought,and Latina/o/x migrant movement politics in the United States

ABSTRACT

This essay reads the Latina/o/x migrant vernacular discourses that emerge out of pro-migrant activism. Anzaldúa’s notion of mestizaje – a logic of border consciousness – is put into conversation with Deleuze’s notion of nomad thought – a logic of movement – to inform a rhetorical strategy for reading the vernacular archive of social movement discourse. The “No Papers, No Fear” is one such social movement that demonstrate the logic of mestizaje/nomadism in their communication strategies. This study illuminates three tensions that define the ways Latina/o/x migrants in the US navigate the spaces of citizenship: tensions between movement/stasis, migrant identity/national identity, and fear/safety.     

论夫妻共有房产中的隐名共有人权益保护

受传统观念的影响,大量夫妻共有房产仅登记在一方名下,另一方的共有权未能体现,成为隐名共有人。本文从分析隐名共有人作为真实权利人保护与登记公信力平衡入手,认为应当完善不动产登记制度,明确登记机构的审查职责,采取＂夫妻联名登记＂,以实现对隐名共有人利益的保护。     

建国前中国共产党资本主义观的回顾与思考

1919年五四爱国运动爆发，中国开启了新民主主义革命的进程。然而与一般的资本主义国家不同，在半殖民地半封建社会时期。中国的资本主义和资产阶级有着很大的特殊性。作为代表中国最广大人民根本利益的中国共产党从1921年成立到1949年新中国建立这近三十年的时间内，不可避免地与资本主义及其资产阶级发生了千丝万缕的关系，并在不同历史阶段采取了不同的策略。总结党在这一时期的历史经验对当下中国经济社会发展仍然有很大启示和教育意义。     

How can children with mild literacy difficulties be supported at the transition to secondary school? A small‐scale quasi‐experimental study

There is evidence that pupils with weak literacy skills struggle on transition to secondary school. Many experience a drop in attainment in the summer break between the two. A British government‐funded programme of rigorously designed research on boosting literacy at transition had (by 2015) found only four of 15 interventions evaluated had positive effects. This small‐scale quasi‐experimental study investigated the effectiveness of support for pupils with mild literacy difficulties on transition to secondary school. Thirty‐two pupils in three schools were involved; half received the programme. Pairs were matched on reading, spelling, age and gender. Intervention was designed around the individual needs of each pupil, focusing variously on language skills, writing, reading and spelling. The group receiving the programme made modest gains in spelling, reading efficiency and single word reading. The comparison group lost ground, relatively, in all three areas. The results suggest a promising line for more rigorous investigation.     

Exploring elementary students’ perceptions of disabilities using children's literature

The portrayal of characters in children's literature can be a very powerful influence on young children. Teachers have a responsibility to expose children to characters of all types, including those with disabilities. The goal of this study was to explore how third and fourth grade students responded to characters with disabilities in children's books. We read a total of 12 books that included characters with disabilities to students in two third‐grade and one fourth‐grade class at three elementary schools. We video‐recorded discussions about the books and identified the following four themes, all of which related to influences on students’ responses to the character with a disability: (a) societal messages, (b) academic responses, (c) teacher influence and (d) portrayal of disability. We recommend that teachers carefully select books featuring characters with disabilities based on the way the disability is portrayed in the book, and, after the read‐aloud, use questioning strategies that encourage students to make thoughtful, deep comments rather than giving ‘expected’ responses.
