In this article, I use the rhetorical homology of the urban jungle to conduct an institutional critique of law enforcement in Ferguson, MO, after Michael Brown was killed. Rhetorical homologies and institutions intersect where language and practice coalesce, which is to say where group consciousness takes material forms. I investigate how, in news coverage of Ferguson, a common form was present across verbal devices and nonverbal practices at macro and micro levels that constituted black neighborhoods as subterranean spaces that needed colonization or containment, as frontier scenes with a savage character logic imposed upon its residents. The homology inscribes particular meanings into black and white skin colors with Anglophile cultural codes, which establishes a savage/explorer binary and keeps black people and spaces invisible, impoverished, and susceptible to racialized policing. The tools of institutional critique—postmodern mapping, boundary interrogation, and micro/macro alignment—inform the discourses and practices of those entrusted to keep daily realities well ordered and organized and to safeguard the social systems of everyday life. Scholars can use homology as a strategy to decode why institutional representatives include some and exclude others, and how they naturalize violence in the name of public service.  相似文献

不同品种晾晒烟接种赤星菌后,游离氮基酸含量也不同。随品种抗病性由弱到强,碱性、芳香族、杂环族三类基酸全病程病健比下降,酸性、脂肪族、侧链为非极性、侧链不带电极性四类氨基酸则上升,酪、赖、精、胱等氨基酸下降,苯、组、脯、蛋、谷、天、丝、苏、甘、缬、亮等氨基酸上升。品种抗性越强,苯、酪、赖、精、组、脯、胱等氨基酸上升越早,消减也越快。游离氨基酸总增值量也随品种抗性增强而增大。  相似文献

As members of the public and private sphere, we are constantly intrigued by the question of the nature, scope, and limitations of dramatic appeals that are made to a higher justice that appears to exist along side the established order and the “rule of law.” While as Americans we often view ourselves as constitutionalists, obedient citizens who acknowledge the legitimacy of the positive laws instantiated through the decisions of the government, at the same time we are mesmerized by the words and deeds of revolutionaries who have been willing to shed blood in the name of a higher law. Using the John Brown trial as a case example, the essay argues that our jurisprudential norms are co‐produced by both text writers and their audiences. By adapting a performative stance, we can perhaps gain a better understanding of the selectivity and inventiveness involved in legal decision making.  相似文献

Drawing upon the concept of homo narran, this essay suggests an extension of Fisher's narrative paradigm, that of glimpsing the processes of continuity and change underlying storytelling, via the concepts of Brown (1978). This approach is illustrated specifically through a rhetorical analysis of a storytelling process presently ongoing in popular discourse about the relationship between human beings and artificially intelligent computers. It reveals the communication patterns used to maintain and shift ideologies, thereby influencing cultural/social continuity and change.  相似文献

对于如何在科学教育过程中实现科学本质教育这一目标,研究者提出了多种模式和观点。其中,在科学课程与教学中融合科学史,即 HPS 教育模式受到人们的重视。布朗运动的发现过程蕴含了丰富的科学本质观教育内容。从布朗运动的发现过程可以看出,要成为在某一领域有重要贡献的科学家,需要奉献、时间以及被相应的科学共同体认可的特殊技术和理论能力;一个科学问题的提出和研究,会受到社会文化和技术水平的影响;科学的本质就是一种探究过程,这种探究过程主要包括观察和提出问题、形成假设、实验求证、得出和交流结论四大基本步骤;科学应当是民主的,这种民主的主要表现之一就是所有的知识主张应当被公平对待,无论这些知识主张的来源如何,即普遍性与公正性标准;科学是不断发展的,布朗运动的发现直至解释经历了布朗的实验观察、古伊的定性研究、爱因斯坦的定量理论模型、贝兰的实验验证等几个阶段。所以,科学具有一种动态的品质,它的一个永恒不变的性质就是变化,就科学的理论内容而言,科学“永远是临时的”。  相似文献

In this article, workplace communications and training consultant Ginny Barnes highlights the workplace tensions as Generation Y young adults replace their baby‐Boomer parents on the job. The author points out that Gen Y staff bring different expectations to the workplace. These young people are, for example, cynical about current leadership and want to be able to trust their workplace leaders; they need parent‐style coaches to help them face the intractable problems that always show up in the workplace; and they are more expert at electronic than interpersonal communication. Barnes says that Gen Y'ers can become good workers but only with some innovative management efforts to help make them so.  相似文献
