The project described in this paper investigated the needs and concerns identified by parents from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds as their children started school in Sydney, Australia. Six groups of parents from Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, Samoan, Turkish and Vietnamese language backgrounds were interviewed about what was important for them to know and/or do as their children started school. In particular, parents were asked to identify information which would have been helpful for them, and that should be available to parents with children starting school. The data obtained were compared with data derived from Australian parents whose first language is English. The results indicate that there are some issues which seem to be of concern to most parents, regardless of their cultural or language background, such as parents' desire for children to be happy and confident at school, as well as some more specific issues for some groups. 相似文献

This article analyses the career narrative produced by a woman working as a small-scale entrepreneur. Career and career transitions
are analyzed in two ways: The sub-stories told in the interview have been analyzed using William Labov’s structural analysis
of personal stories; career management competencies are used in the analysis of creating coherence in the career narrative.
The characteristics of career created in the narrative, the transitions included in the career and how the entrepreneurial
self is created in the narrative are explored.
Résumé. Créer de la cohérence en transition de carrière: Une étude de cas de récit de femme entrepreneur. Cet article analyse le récit de carrière produit par une femme travaillant comme entrepreneur dans une petite entreprise. La carrière et les transitions de carrière sont analysées selon deux axes: les épisodes recueillis au cours de l’entretien ont été analysés en utilisant l’analyse structurale des histoires personnelles de William Labov; on a eu recours aux compétences de gestion de carrière pour analyser la fa?on de créer de la cohérence dans le récit de carrière. On explore les caractéristiques de la carrière créées dans le récit, les transitions incluses dans la carrière et la manière dont le soi entrepreneurial est créé dans le récit.
Zusammenfassung. Die Schaffung von Koh?renz beim Berufsübergang. Eine narrative Fallstudie mit einer Unternehmerin. Dieser Beitrag analysiert die Berufslaufbahn, narrativ berichtet von einer Frau, die als Kleinunternehmerin arbeitet. Berufslaufbahn und Berufsüberg?nge werden in zweifacher Hinsicht analysiert: die im Interview erz?hlten Einzelberichte wurden an Hand von William Labov′s Strukturanalyse der pers?nlichen Geschichten untersucht und die Berufsmanagement- Kompetenzen werden in der Analyse daraufhin analysiert, wie Koh?renz innerhalb der Berufslaufbahngeschichte erzielt wird. Es werden die in dem narrativen Bericht gebildeten Merkmale der Berufslaufbahn, einschlie?lich der Berufsüberg?nge untersucht sowie die Art und Weise, wie das Unternehmer-Selbst in dem narrativen Bericht gebildet wird.
Resumen. Creando coherencia en la transición de la carrera: Un estudio de caso narrativo de la mujer empresaria. Este artículo analiza las producciones narrativas de una mujer empresaria que trabaja en una compa?ía peque?a, en relación con su carrera. La carrera y las transiciones son analizadas de dos formas: las sub-historias contadas en la entrevista han sido analizadas usando la técnica de William Labov de análisis estructural de historias personales; las competencias para la gestión de la carrera se utilizan en el análisis de cómo crear coherencia en la narrativa sobre la carrera. Europe's commitment to language learning has resulted in higher percentages of pupils studying foreign languages during primary education. In England, recent policy decisions to expand foreign language learning at primary level by 2010 create major implications for transition to secondary. This paper presents findings on transition issues from case studies of a DfES-funded project evaluating 19 local authority Pathfinders piloting the introduction of foreign language learning at primary level. Research on transition in other countries sets these findings in context. Finally, it investigates the challenges England faces for transition in the light of this expansion and discusses future implications. 相似文献

Quality of adjustment to athletic career retirement is dependent, in part, on athletic identity salience, or the degree to which one defines themself in the athlete role. Researchers, however, have seldom explored how athlete identities are shaped and reshaped by organizations and managers prior to retirement. Consequently, the purpose of this study was to examine identity regulation in the North American field of men's professional ice hockey. Results from the study indicate that managers regulated a bipartite athletic identity, defined by performance excellence and beneficence; a largely self-directed, non-sporting alternative; and a nascent merger between the two. Further, regulation was found to limit individual development and, in turn, preparation for athletic career retirement. In an effort to assist athletes in developing identities that are more conducive to retirement and individual long-term well-being, the author suggests that organizations and managers in professional ice hockey challenge and reform extant practices and modes of regulation. 相似文献

At the core of higher education is the experience of students whose focus for learning is often directed towards their future
employability. In this paper, we explore the intersections between two large international research projects involving over
500 students. Interviews with students yielded their conceptions of learning and work in specific discipline and professional
areas. Analysis of the Swedish and Australian data sets showed the important interplay between students’ individual ideas
about learning and future work with their workplace. A meta-analysis of the two projects highlights the utility of higher
education for students’ future working life and suggests ways in which institutions and policy makers can critique current

Action research and collaborative research: their specific contributions to professional development
The increasing complexity of the teaching profession calls for engaged professionals in their professional development. This article claims that participative types of research contribute differently to professional development. Its intent is to explore the different contributions action research and collaborative research bring. One action research and one collaborative research have been conducted involving school personnel. They have been assessed mid‐course with regard to various components of professional development, including the learning taking place, changes made to professional practices and development of the collective competencies. Group interviews were conducted and each participant produced a written summary. The results show that participants’ individual competencies are strengthened, as well as collective competencies emerging such as the development of a common vocabulary and a shared vision about the school’s mission and mathematics curriculum. Learning is more relational in the action research project, and more connected to knowledge in the collaborative research project. Tensions are also present. They deal with the need to come up with concrete results, the urgency of action, the need to be open to the unknown, a tacit agreement to expose one’s vulnerability to others, the need for interdependence and for accountability. In conclusion, researchers identify their own sources of tensions and recognize that those types of research are important situations of learning. 相似文献

During the transition from elementary school to secondary school, in Germany, students are assigned to different school tracks, academic or non-academic, that differ markedly in compositional and institutional characteristics, e.g., the level of cognitive activation and performance standards are higher in academic tracks than in non-academic tracks. Currently, there is a lack of research examining the changes in achievement goals (mastery-approach, performance-approach, and performance-avoidance goals) and in the association between achievement goals and school achievement during the transition to these different school tracks. There were 1646 students who participated in a large-scale, three-wave longitudinal study from Grade 4 to Grade 6. While results revealed only slight differences between the two school tracks, the three types of achievement goals declined over time. In elementary school mastery-approach goals were positively and performance-approach goals negatively associated with school grades. After the transition to secondary school mastery-approach goals predicted school grades positively, whereas performance-approach goals negatively influenced achievement (academic track). Overall, the results indicate that between-school-tracking plays a minor role for the development of achievement goals and the relation between goals and achievement. 相似文献
