Selecting or Upgrading Software and Web Sites in the Classroom

Three issues are important considerations when selecting or updating software and/or web sites for children’s use in classrooms or computers labs. The first issue is computer integration: products need to mesh with the goals or standards identified by the school, district or state. Second, violence should be avoided, especially if children initiate and control the violence. Third, the developmental appropriateness of programs is an essential consideration. The outstanding software and web sites for 2004 are reviewed and illustrated with screen captions.     

Facebook as a Communication Tool for an Academic Library: East West University Library,Bangladesh Perspective

The primary objectives of this research article are to explore the concept of communication tools using Facebook, and to evaluate the performance of the East West University (EWU) Library Facebook page as a communication tool. The EWU Library Facebook page uses a variety of strategies and techniques to engage with its patrons. The author's intention is to examine this library Facebook page, which is explored using a case study method. This article also focuses on how Facebook facilitates collaborations between the library and the patron's community, as well as the implications for academic libraries in the future. This case study reviews the literature on the use of social networking while focusing on Facebook as a communication tool and engaging libraries in social networking. The article emphasizes the author's experience of working in an academic library to identify the main trends in providing services based on posting various topics through the Facebook page of the EWU Library, Bangladesh. The numerous issues in adapting Facebook as a communication tool and an exploration of the opportunity and drawbacks of the use of the Facebook application in academic libraries are also discussed.     

News Organizations 2.0

This study aims at understanding international news differences by studying the headlines of over 360,000 news stories posted on the Twitter pages of 12 Arabic and English news organizations. The most referenced countries as well as figures and political actors are examined in these headlines, and the results show that a number of news values elements provide insight into the nature of the news selection. While Arabic channels are mostly focused on the events taking place in the Middle East (proximity), some English-language channels show clear preference for the countries from which they are located, especially CNN and Sky News, as well as Arabic and English state-owned media outlets like France 24 and RT (agenda and ideology). The findings suggest that news content largely follows a number of news values criteria that can explain the news selection process.     

山西省文化信息资源共享工程服务方式

目前全国文化信息资源共享工程已在山西全省范围内建成7 940个基层站点,我省基层站点的服务模式有3种,卫星接收模式、宽带PC模式和宽带机顶盒模式。现已利用宽带机盒模式即IPTV开辟"山西省文化信息资源共享工程频道",对各远程站点提供视频点播服务。截至2007年6月底,省分中心向农村党员现代远程教育累计输送、更新资源量近4TB,既节省了资金、又操作简单、便于管理、维护简便。在2010年前,我们计划建成或完善30 123个文化共享工程基层服务站点的拓展型改造。在未来的几年中,文化信息共享工程山西省分中心要以坚持自建为主,与其他单位合作建点为辅的发展方针,逐步完善省分中心的硬件及软件设备,形成有序有效的分级管理服务体系,完善共享工程服务网络,加强资源的建设,建成山西省资源库,尽最大的努力推动山西省文化资源共享工程建设更加深入发展。     

Pakistani University Library Web Sites: Features,Contents, and Maintenance Issues

ABSTRACT

This study explores the current status and features of Pakistan's academic library Web sites. A checklist describing features and content was prepared based on a review of the literature related to academic libraries’ Web sites. Then, all 85 library Web sites of Pakistani universities and degree-awarding institutions recognized by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan were surveyed and analyzed using the checklist. Interviews with library professionals were conducted to learn more about the problems and issues with building and maintaining library Web sites. Results indicate that Pakistani academic library Web sites have effective features such as contrasting color schemes, easily readable text, minimal use of horizontal scrolling, and English-language text. Staff information, OPACs, and navigation features are also widely found on the Web sites. Features found less frequently include the use of Web 2.0 technologies, Web site aid tools, information about library buildings, and general library information. By offering information about the status of Pakistani academic library Web sites, the study can serve as a foundation for discussion between libraries and other parts of the university, as well as a benchmark for evaluating the progress of academic library Web sites in Pakistan     

新疆不同民族大学生体育选项课差异性研究

通过问卷调查的研究方法,发现新疆大学生选择体育授课的项目主要集中在球类和游泳项目,民族学生和汉族学生之间、男女生之间在选择项目及参加体育活动的心态方面存在着微妙的差异。在选项中,大部分学生基于感性的成分较多,理性的内容所占比重较少,缺乏教师的正确的引导。
