Specifying Hotel Guestroom Reservation ystem Using Z Notation

The use of formal specification in software development is becoming increasingly prevalent. The Z nota-tion is a formal method, a language, and a style for expressing formal specification of software systems. This paperpresents a part of the specification work on a hotel guestroom reservation system.     

Academic inventors as brokers

Academic inventors are university scientists who appear as designated inventors of patents owned either by business companies, academic institutions or individuals. We analyse their relationships with co-inventors, who may be either academic colleagues, students, or, very often, industrial researchers. Gould and Fernandez's (1989) taxonomy of ‘brokerage’ roles is adjusted to patent data, and complemented with information drawn from both academic inventors’ publications and replies to a short questionnaire. Only very few academic inventors are found to hold brokerage positions. Such inventors have a large number of patents, a strong publication record and a higher-than-average share of patents held by companies, rather than universities. Relationships of academic inventors with co-inventors from industry are weaker and less likely to be maintained than those with co-inventors from academia. Academic inventors in gatekeeping positions (between university and industry) maintain the strongest ties with all types of co-inventors.

Z39．50客户系统的实现技术探讨

文章介绍近几年来国内外在Z39．50方面的研究与应用,分析了当前Z39．50客户端在设计模式上存在的问题。通过比较了解C／S模式和B／S模式各自的优缺点之后,提出了一种基于半B／S模式的Z39．50客户端的设计方案,并对具体的采用技术进行了初步的探讨。     

Do education and income affect support for democracy in Muslim countries? Evidence from the Pew Global Attitudes Project

Using micro-level public opinion data from the Pew Global Attitudes Project 2005, this study investigates the effect of educational attainment and income on support for democracy in five predominantly Muslim countries: Indonesia, Jordan, Lebanon, Pakistan, and Turkey. Holding all else constant and compared to not finishing primary education, this study finds that secondary education and higher education encourage support for democracy in Jordan, Lebanon and Pakistan. The results therefore suggest that support for democracy is a social benefit of education in Jordan, Lebanon, and Pakistan. Regarding income, the results indicate that relative to the poor, those belonging to middle-income groups are more supportive of democracy in Lebanon and Turkey. Curiously, there is no statistical relationship between belonging to the richest groups and supporting democracy.
