Latinas/os succeeding in academia: the effect of mentors and multiethnic coursework

Academia often devalues diverse identities, cultures, and languages through emphasis placed on academic values. To ascertain how established and new Latina/o academics achieved success in academia, the author conducted interviews with ten Latina/o academics; they noted mentoring and multiethnic coursework as influential in their success as academics. The author suggests mentoring practices and multiethnic courses should be receptive and sensitive to the complexities and varieties of cultural and linguistic identities, thereby identifying a balance between recognizing diverse language and cultural practices in academia while avoiding generalizations and assumptions about ethnic groups. The author offers implications for practice and research.     

A pedagogical alliance for academic achievement: Socio-Emotional effects on assessment outcomes

Assessment of student learning outcomes is often discussed in relation to curriculum, standards and even administration practices. However, assessment of learning outcomes is rarely discussed in light of students’ socio-emotional contexts, which might help or hinder learning outcomes. For example, do students’ perceptions of the teacher as trustworthy influence their empathic views on classmates, learning engagement, academic achievement and wellbeing? The present paper reports the results of a theoretically-driven, short-term longitudinal study designed to explore the effects of socio-emotional variables, specifically students’ trust in teachers and empathy towards self and peers on engagement for learning, academic achievement, and wellbeing. Grounded in attachment theory and the LEAFF model, Panel Structural Equation Modeling (P-SEM) results revealed three significant pathways, which provide evidence that student trust in teachers may serve to launch a domino effect of outcomes, predicting students’ empathic views of classmates, learning engagement, academic achievement, and wellbeing.

以加拿大杨茎段为外植体探讨不同激素处理对愈伤组织诱导及不定芽形成的影响.研究表明,在外植体消毒中,以0.1％升汞处理4.5min时间效果最好,以MS培养基＋0.15mg·L-1TDZ＋ 0.1mg·L-1NAA＋1.0mg·L-16-BA的愈伤组织诱导率最高达60％.丛生芽诱导最佳培养基为MS培养基＋0.15mg·L-1TDZ＋0.125mg·L-1NAA＋1.25mg·L-16-BA,丛生芽诱导率达86.7％.     

LLC谐振式DC/DC变换器的研究与实现

基于基波分析法（ FHA）对LLC谐振变换器进行建模分析,并以此为依据提出一种简化的参数设计方法。该方法根据谐振电路的二端口模型得到归一化工作频率和电压增益的关系,按照规定输入输出的要求确定电压增益后得到谐振工作频率,进而可以得到谐振电路的特性阻抗和谐振腔元件参数。利用Saber软件仿真和硬件实验验证了该方法的有效性,表明所设计的变换器可实现开关管的零电压开通和整流二极管的零电流关断,能够降低开关损耗,提高装置效率。

Using quality enhancement processes to achieve sustainable development and support for sessional staff

Abstract

Consistent with quality enhancement, we report on how we used a continuous improvement cycle to formalise and embed an academic development and support programme for our School’s sessional staff. Key factors in establishing and maintaining the programme included: local change agents supported initially by institutional project funding; School support for key academic and administrative roles; timely access to reports and tools from nationally-funded projects and sessional staff input. Reviewing our approach against national standards highlighted ongoing actions while collaboration with academic developers is critical for advancing our understanding and reviewing our approaches in our continuously changing context.     

‘A Heaven of Hell, a Hell of Heaven’: His Dark Materials, Inverted Theology, and the End of Philip Pullman’s Authority

This article argues that Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials may be read as a series which attempts to assault the Christian doctrine of God. We believe that this demonstrably accords with Pullman’s personal views, and that, through his story, he seeks to foster such views in his readership. However, the accuracy of his attack falls short of its intended mark when it is examined alongside classical Christian theology. The Authority which Pullman’s narrative destroys is actually more akin to the Christian view of the devil than he is the divine, and the victories of Will and Lyra—as a new Adam and Eve—have strong resemblances to the victories which Christianity claims for Christ and Mary. Pullman’s narrative, therefore, becomes an inversion of his deicidal intention rather than an inverting and revolutionary destruction of theology.
