A time of destiny for Norwegian mission schools in Zululand and Natal under the policy of Bantu Education (1948–1955)

ABSTRACT

When the purified National Party (NP) came to power in South Africa in 1948, they introduced educational policies based on the ideology of apartheid. At that time 7,183 pupils attended primary education in 110 Lutheran Norwegian mission schools in Zululand and Natal. When the State took over these schools after the passing of the Bantu Education Act of 1953, the number had increased to 10,415. Together with other Lutheran missions, the Norwegians participated in running a teacher training college and a High School. For over a century before this, educational work had been a fundamental instrument in assisting mission work. Against this background, the paper attempts to answer two questions: How did the Norwegian missionaries relate to the policy of Bantu Education? Was the experience of the Norwegians attempting to carry out their educational work under this racial segregation legislation similar to that of other mission organisations at the time?     

Beyond the Mission Statement: Alternative Futures for Today's Universities

ABSTRACT

Many post-secondary institutions utilize the mission statement as the key tool for positioning and marketing their strategic direction. Unfortunately, most mission statements found in higher education are far too simplistic and general to give substance and direction to differentiation and positioning of universities. This paper presents findings from a three-month participatory action research process at a large urban Canadian university seeking to establish a marketing mind set. Five possible futures reflecting the range of thinking regarding the role of universities emerged from the research process. Each alternative represents separate and different possible directions, the implications of which become more evident by contrast.

中华麻疯救济会是一个由基督徒发起组织的民间社会团体,以铲除中国麻疯为己任。本文分析了中华麻疯救济会的各项事工与效果,指出在其存在的二十多年中,担当了铲除麻疯运动的领袖角色,该会的成员主要由中国人组成,他们通过社会网络组成一个共同体,从而使个体力量倍增,作为地方社会的"意见领袖",这些组成共同体的成员既是信息传播的重要一环,也是救济会成功的重要原因之一。
