Voting alone: the decline of bodily mass communication and public sensationalism in presidential elections

The congregational crowd was a powerful mode of political communication in the nineteenth-century US until banished by the imposition of literate modes on popular electoral politics by Progressive reformers. We examine its major channels of expression, bodily mass communication and public sensationalism, within a framework of class-based struggle, observing that the practice of live bodily assembly created broad points of entry into political life, socialized the young, and successfully conveyed the importance of voting. A text-based normative model of the informed deliberative voter, we argue, offers too narrow a conception of participation compared to a more spaciously conceived democratic community.     

Biased into posting: interactions with social media network political posts during the 2016 U.S. presidential election

The 2016 U.S. presidential election saw social media continue to play an important role in citizens’ political engagement. This study examines the effect of seeing social media political post sharing on individuals’ own political post sharing. Results from a two-wave survey suggest the interplay within the network is important. Seeing others share political posts and perceiving posts were biased towards a candidate predicted sharing political posts.     

Imagining the flowers,but working the rich and heavy clay: participation and empowerment in action research for health

Participation of the ‘target group’ is a key concept in working on empowerment in health education. However, it raises many questions and is not without struggle. I will discuss the findings from a study into the state of the art of empowerment in health education, which includes a literature review and the analysis of eight Dutch health‐promotion projects. An important finding is that participation is not an unequivocal concept. Professionals working in health education strongly disagree on the value, goals and meaning of participation. Moreover, in working on empowerment, a tension exists—between the ideal of participatory, ‘bottom‐up’ approaches on the one hand; and the ‘top‐down’ structure of health education programmes, on the other. I will argue for a ‘realistic approach’ in which the practice of health promotion is taken as the starting point to work on empowerment. After all, imagining the flowers is easy, but working the rich and heavy clay is the challenge.     

Equity and marketisation: a brief commentary

Beginning with a reflection on the Participation and Equity Program (PEP) in Australia in the 1980s, this response describes the distinctive ideological shift from a social democratic to a market conception of equity in education over the past three decades. This shift has been accompanied by changes in the techniques of educational governance, from the collaborative approach of the PEP, which emphasised the importance of trust in teachers as professionals, to new managerialism focused on efficiency and accountability. Market reforms in education have continued to use such traditionally socially democratic notions as equity, but have been enormously successful in re-articulating their meaning. A commentary is provided on the papers in this Special Issue and their collective analysis of governmental strategies that have led to this re-articulation of equity; the extent to which these strategies have been successful; the consequences they have had on students and school communities, and for the work of teachers and schools; and possibilities for creating new approaches in education that undermine the seemingly hegemonic neo-liberal imaginary and work towards a more progressive democratic view of educational equity.     

“阳光体育运动”背景下毕节试验区农村中学生体育生活方式现状调研

为了解"全国亿万学生阳光体育运动"在毕节试验区一年多来的开展成效,通过问卷调查、文献研究、数理统计等方法,对毕节试验区农村中学生体育态度、体育生活方式的参与方式、体育习惯、体育消费行为以及影响参与体育活动的因素等方面进行了调研。调查表明:农村中学生总体体育态度良好,但"终身体育"意识不强、男女生在体育生活方式的参与方式差异性明显,体育活动的频率呈"U字型"分布。体育锻炼的项目多集中在有场地器材的地方进行,技能要求不高、消费也较低。通过调查,了解到场所器材缺乏,师生及家长体育意识淡薄是制约农村中学有效开展"阳光体育运动"的主要障碍。     

社会网络环境下用户参与图书馆数字资源建设的需求调查-以部分沿海高校为例

以问卷方式,在部分沿海高校调查图书馆用户、专家、馆员对社会网络环境下用户参与的图书馆数字资源建设的认知、需求状况,从不同角度了解用户参与图书馆数字资源建设的需求和应用问题。据此提出:转变观念,增进用户和馆员的有关知识技能;根据用户需求和本馆情况,选用适合的社会网络模式;发挥图书馆在用户参与的数字资源建设中的引导作用;以需求为导向,逐步建设高质量、特色化、多元化的数字资源体系。
