Inequality of opportunity for educational achievement in Latin America: Evidence from PISA 2006–2009

We evaluate how far away six Latin American countries stand from a normative goal of equality of opportunity for educational achievement in PISA 2006–2009. We work with alternative characterizations of types: gender, school type (public or private), parental education, and their combinations. Following Checchi–Peragine's (2010) non-parametric method, we find that inequality of opportunity for educational achievement in Latin America ranges from less than 1% to up to 25%, depending on the year, the country, the subject and the specification of circumstances. These magnitudes are substantial with respect to what is found in comparator countries. Parental education and school type prove to be important sources of inequality of opportunity, contrary to gender. By means of sensitivity analyses, while most results show small to moderate variation in terms of magnitudes, in ordinal terms (rankings) they remain quite stable. Brazil stands out as the most opportunity-unequal country of the sample.

动态战略适应视角是从大学战略管理中提出来,学部制改革作为大学内部治理结构中重要的战略选择,涉及高校内人、财、物多方面整合。基于动态战略适应理论的分析框架,即大学战略与大学所处的内外部环境、所拥有的资源以及大学内部组织之间的适应状态,提出学部制改革成效分析范式,即学部制改革的环境适应、资源适应及组织适应。     

Collecting the Revolution: New Directions in Research

ABSTRACT

This essay reports on the latest efforts to assess the collections of materials relating to the Russian Revolution held in the Hoover Institution and the New York Public Library (NYPL). The first section reviews the presentations made by Bertrand Patenaude, Michael Herrick, and Robert Davis during the roundtable “Collecting the Revolution” at the annual meeting of the Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies in November 2017. The second presents additional information documenting the development of NYPL’s and Hoover’s collections located in The Wisconsin State Historical Society Archive and the Archive of the Russian State Library.

湖南卫视＂领SHOW2013＂的开篇之作《我是歌手》开播以来,叫好又叫座,原因在于其既富有观赏性,又兼具价值引导与文化鼓励的功能。主要体现在其迎合受众的心理需求,重在展现人性的善良美好;重新建构了关于成功的集体认同,消解了以往片面的成功观;致力打造偶像全面的人格魅力,树立了正确的偶像观;激活了集体无意识下的怀旧审美,直击受众心灵。这些对其他电视娱乐节目的借鉴意义在于,作为成功电视娱乐节目的共同标准,价值引导与文化鼓励的内涵可以理解为：能够消解和扭转当前社会的不良风气和思想趋向;能彰显真善美和展示人性的光辉;能够顺应受众需求及调试受众心理;能唤起民众内心深处的美好情感以及传递正能量。     

An Experimental Study of the Effect of Educational Guidance on a Selected Group of High School Sophomores

The question of an interaction over time between ability grouping and personality variables was the focus of the present study which examined pertinent data from 260 female high school students. Two standardized personality instruments, in addition to several scales designed by the E’s, were administered to students of the upper and lower ability tracks in a Catholic high school, grades 9 and 12. Ss in the lower track were found to have a lower need for achievement, a higher need to avoid failure, and a higher average score of test anxiety than Ss in the upper track. The effects of ability grouping did interact with grade level for a correlate of personality, level of aspiration. Relative to Ss in the upper track, the lower track Ss experienced a reduction in level of aspiration over time. Both future directions of associated research and educational practices were discussed within the context of the present findings.     

WebCT and Its Growth as a Type II Application

Abstract

Maddux, Johnson, and Willis mentioned in 1992 some “yet-to-be-developed types” that “have the potential to be Type II software if they are used in such a way that the user is given the ability to learn in new and better ways.” The authors of this paper will frame the discussion of learning management systems (LMS) around the concept of Type I and Type II applications of computers in education. We suggest that with the new trends of interoperability within WebCT, more researchers will accept WebCT as a potential Type II application. As more interactive learning objects are developed and shared on the WebCT format, it should be easier for instructors to create and teach courses that reflect the value systems expressed in the concept of Type II learning.
