In ‘Numberland’: play-based pedagogy in response to imaginative numeracy

The overarching interest of this study concerns how to outline learning opportunities and support in early childhood education (ECE) without losing its play-based character. More specifically, the study reports an empirical investigation into the evolving activity of a 6.5-year-old child and an adult conversing about the child’s drawing of ‘Numberland’. What the child’s drawing and his discussion about it with the adult tell us about his emergent mathematics skills is analysed. How the child shifts between speaking and enacting as if and as is, and how the adult supports his mathematics understanding through entering into the play-frame are analysed. How imaginary, play-based activities like this can provide the means for ECE and what this implies for the teacher are discussed.     

The meaning of play: A cross‐cultural study of American and Japanese teachers’ perspectives on play

Abstract

Early childhood teachers’ understandings of play were examined in a qualitative comparative study of 41 Japanese and 41 American participants. Qualitative analysis of the data yielded five themes: the power of living, the opportunity to learn and to develop, fun activities, child's work, and the opportunity to explore nature. Two themes emerged in regard to the meaning of play for adults: enjoyable and voluntary activities and child's play. Finally, we identified two themes regarding playfulness: state of heart and fun feelings. Teachers in both nations used rhetoric that is congruent with the current Zeitgeist of developmentally appropriate early education. One theme that differentiated the groups was the notion that play is children's work. While several Americans mentioned this slogan, this was not the case for the Japanese participants. In contrast, the theme of play as the power of living was more representative of Japanese teachers’ understandings of play, and this reflects the philosophy set forth by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology.     

中国艺术研究院图书馆藏抄本《剧选》考论

中国艺术研究院图书馆藏有抄本《剧选》二集,收录剧本152种,以往被认为属于车王府藏曲本的复抄本。经笔者比较考证,其中70种当源于车王府藏本,此外82种当为1930年前后由张干卿等人抄录,为民国初期京剧剧本的复抄本。其中有一部分曲本如《绣囊记》、《黄土岗》、《吴绛雪》等剧等较为稀见,论文从来源、特点及价值三方面对这些稀见剧本作介绍。     

三网融合背景下电信运营商网络著作权保护问题及对策

三网融合之后,作品资源将会更加稀缺,传播的范围将更加广泛,相应的作品价值也会提高,有利于推动网络的正版化,同时也会产生新的网络著作权问题。由于网络侵权行为非常快捷方便,其复制、发表行为几乎不存在门槛,近些年来,权利人起诉电信运营商网络著作权侵权纠纷不断,给企业声誉和经营发展造成了不利影响。从电信运营商的角度,对目前网络著作权保护存在的问题进行分析,并结合企业实际,提出相应的对策和措施,以期有利于网络著作权保护的社会氛围的形成和网络业的健康发展。     

Windows into Children’s Thinking: A Guide to Storytelling and Dramatization

Telling and dramatizing stories is an increasingly popular addition to the preschool curriculum, largely due to the attention this activity has received through the writings of Vivian Paley (Bad guys don’t have birthdays: fantasy play at four. The University of Chicago Press, Chicago, 1988; The boy who would be a helicopter: the uses of storytelling in the kindergarten. Harvard University Press, Cambridge, MA, 1990; A child’s work: the importance of fantasy play. The University of Chicago Press, Chicago, 2004). While the writings of Paley and others (Cooper, When stories come to school: telling, writing, and performing stories in the early childhood classroom. Teachers & Writers Collaborative, New York, 1993; Engel 1999) focus on the social and cognitive outcomes children experience as a result of storytelling, less has been written about the process of writing and dramatizing stories with young children. This article discusses procedures and considerations that enhance storytelling with preschool children, including effective prompts for encouraging children’s creativity, potential trouble spots such as aggression in stories, and ways that storytelling can enhance home-school relationships.
