Watching Hamlet’s Mother: Exploring the Relationship between Hamlet and Gertrude with a Year 7 Class

ABSTRACT

In this essay, I draw on the experience of reading Hamlet with a class of 11- and 12-Year-old boys in a London comprehensive school. I explore how a number of comments in my classroom reveal the complexities of my students’ thinking about gender and sexuality in Hamlet. I look at how these thoughts are difficult for the students to fully express, and I argue that it is necessary to attend to the heteroglossic nature of the language used within the classroom.

Computer-prepared questionnaires and grouping theories: Considerations for mail surveys in academic settings

Possible respondents in a 1974 survey of University of Kentucky doctoral graduates were sent either computer-prepared or offset-printed questionnaires, personalized and identical in content. No difference was found in the overall response rates to the two types of instruments. But when the responses were categorized by the academic major of each recipient according to the theories of Holland (1973) and Biglan (1973a, 1973b), differential response rates appeared. Moreover, interactions of questionnaire type and grouping category were also evident. Response rates were projected using the best type of questionnaire for each grouping category in which a significant interaction occurred. Neither grouping theory was found to be superior to the other in projected response rates.     

Conceptions of text and textuality: Critical perspectives in literary theory from structuralism to poststructuralism

In attempting to explain the relationship between reader and text, theorists have alternated focus upon either the reader or the text, to clarify and validate perspectives on epistemological problems of hermeneutics—or interpretation—as the logical culmination of the reading act. Beyond facilitating comprehension, the essence of teaching reading in language education is the determination of cross-cultural aspects of communication and language competence wherein the heart of hermeneutics lies. Therefore, this paper surveys a diverse field of cross-discipinary research incorporating both philosophical and empirical methodology in literary theory, semiotics, reading theory, philosophy, cognitive psychology, and linguistics, in order to more clearly define an approach to investigation of hermeneutics in relation to the reading act and literature (or written text).
