The Representation of Altruistic and Egoistic Motivations in Children’s TV Programming

A content analysis of children’s television examined the frequency with which behaviors were (a) driven by altruistic versus egoistic motivations, (b) performed by affable/surly characters, (c) rewarded/punished, and (d) present in content popular among different age groups (2–5, 6–11, and 12–17 years old). We found that portrayal patterns stressed the importance of egoistic motivations (particularly competence, autonomy, and relatedness) for older children. The findings are interpreted in line with logic underlying the model of intuitive morality and exemplars (MIME; Tamborini, 2013), suggesting that media representations can influence the motivations of their viewers.

Exposure to Media Violence and Young Children with and Without Disabilities: Powerful Opportunities for Family-Professional Partnerships

There is growing concern regarding the amount and type of violence that young children are exposed to on a daily basis. Through media, popular toys and video games violent images are consistently present in children’s lives starting at a very young age. This paper discusses (a) the growing presence of young children’s exposure to media violence, (b) the influence of media violence on early childhood development and well-being, (c) the impact of media violence on young children with disabilities, and (d) recommendations for addressing this national dilemma within the context of family-professional partnerships. The Benefits of Using Sociodrama in the Elementary Classroom: Promoting Caring Relationships Among Educators and Students

In the current age of academic rigor, standards and accountability, the fostering of caring relationships in the classroom may not always be a priority. Expressing care for another person is a skill that can be taught and nurtured through a supportive educational environment. Sociodrama encourages each of its participants to develop self-confidence and self-expression through risk-taking and exploration in activities that explore real life personal feelings and situations. By using sociodrama as a means for exploring issues in the classroom it is possible to celebrate participants’ individuality and to create caring and nurturing relationships among educators and students. This article examines the research describing the benefits of including sociodrama in the elementary curriculum.

客家三脚采茶戏自大陆江西赣南传入至台湾后,随时代演进与观众品味,逐渐发展为客家改良戏与客家大戏,放眼台湾客家剧团当今的发展,唯有荣兴客家采茶剧团一枝独秀,而其它的客家戏团仍旧以宗教活动的演出为主,对于客家戏曲的演出仍然是以传统戏目与在外台的戏剧演出的模式为基本。本文以台湾大竹堑地区为研究区域,选择荣兴客家采茶剧团的客家大戏舞台剧演出《乙未丹心─吴汤兴》作为研究对象,从客家戏曲在台湾的演进、仪式与戏剧的关系、与此剧团的表演,来探讨客家戏团今日的发展,剧本意涵分析,以及表演方式、角色诠释、音乐与舞台设计。申论在当今全球化与资本主义旅游表演兴盛的21世纪前10年,为求生存,这个剧团加入现代剧场表演形式与元素,呈现台湾戏剧由简朴逐渐发展到精致的风格。
