Reach Out! Highlighting Collections and Expanding Outreach to Non-Traditional Communities across Academia

As the number of reference questions continues to decline across academic libraries, innovative models have been developed to highlight collections and reach underserved communities. This article describes four outreach models at the University of New Mexico University Libraries, including satellite outreach services, pop-up book trucks and events, and relationship building at various locations on and off campus. The authors describe innovative approaches including curated browsing experiences and relationship marketing to underserved communities. Lessons learned, future approaches, and the benefits of each model will also be explored.

从藏品到展品，从沉默者到讲述者——科学博物馆藏品向展品的转化模式与传播效果分析

现代科学博物馆与传统珍品收藏所的根本区别之一,即“藏品转化为展品”。对于科学博物馆来说,其展览品质和功能的实现,很大程度上取决于藏品转化为展品的深度和质量。通过理论研究和实践分析,笔者提出“图文转化”“多媒体转化”“机械与机电互动转化”和“叙事场景转化”四种藏品向展品的转化模式,旨在充分激活藏品功能,挖掘出其中的信息内涵并呈现给观众,最终实现展品展陈及博物馆教育的多重价值。

科技藏品在科技博物馆中的地位随着时代变迁与教育理念的变化在不断变化。科技藏品除了具备与互动性科学展品共有的科学性之外,还具备基于历史的真实性、信息传播的多维性和收藏价值的凸显性。并据此提出了五种科技藏品的科学传播策略:情境再现法、布局突出法、对比分析法、协同展示法、故事讲述法。     

Put your instruction to the test: Half a dozen question types for evaluating students

There are different types of questions that can be used to determine whether students learned what they were taught in an information literacy (IL) session. This article summarizes best practices from the education literature for constructing short-answer, alternative-response, matching, multiple-choice, interpretative, and essay questions, as well as includes question examples from the author’s own experience delivering IL instruction.

The OECD and the local: PISA-based Test for Schools in the USA

The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) has recently piloted the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA)-based Test for Schools in the USA. In this paper, I contend that by connecting directly with local school boards this new initiative has the potential to further promote the OECD's educational agenda in local policy debates. I begin to develop this argument by providing an overview of the OECD and its work. I then lay out a theoretical framework around global governance and knowledge production within the context of the OECD. Next, I provide a brief overview of the traditional PISA study and compare it to the new PISA-based Test for Schools initiative. This context provides the foundation for a discussion of the ways in which a school-based international assessment can operate as a governance tool, allowing international organizations to have greater influence in the formation and implementation of local educational policies.

Heterogeneity in the educational impacts of natural disasters: Evidence from Hurricane Florence

In September 2018, Hurricane Florence caused widespread and extended school closures throughout North Carolina. Leveraging variation within schools over time, we explore heterogeneity in the impact of hurricane-related schooling disruption on students’ end-of-grade test scores. Impacts were not concentrated on students performing at the lowest levels in the prior year nor on those from the most disadvantaged backgrounds. Rather, the estimates suggest that most students experienced small declines in test performance irrespective of baseline human capital or demographic group.
